Prof Yanto Chandra Kicks Off the “Collaborative Research Postgraduate Students' Seminar Series”
The School of Graduate Studies of Lingnan University and The Education University of Hong Kong co-hosted the"Collaborative Research Postgraduate Students' Seminar Series" in the 2024/25 academic year. The inaugural online seminar, held on 4 October 2024, featured a compelling presentation by Prof Yanto Chandra from City University of Hong Kong on"Social Entrepreneurship in and for Public Administration." The seminar attracted a diverse audience of postgraduate students and academics from various institutions.
Prof Chandra is an accomplished Associate Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, where he co-directs the Technology, Policy, and Law Lab and is a core member of the Laboratory of Public Management and Policy. His research focuses on the impact of entrepreneurship and innovation on social and public sector performance, as well as the influence of new technologies on the economy, civil society, and policy.
During the seminar, Prof Chandra illustrated the ongoing transition in the field of social entrepreneurship, its implications, and the challenges it faces. His insightful presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the evolving field of social entrepreneurship and its potential to address global challenges. He began by introducing the concept and transition of social entrepreneurship, drawing on several local case studies to illustrate the key principles and practices. Delving deeper, Prof Chandra then discussed the conceptual overlap between social entrepreneurship and public administration. He highlighted how integrating these two domains can lead to the development of innovative solutions in public service delivery, enabling governments and public institutions to tackle complex social and environmental issues more effectively.
Prof Chandra's presentation offered attendees a fresh perspective on how to harness the power of social entrepreneurship within a public administration framework. His insights were both thought-provoking and practical, emphasising the integration of non-profit and for-profit organisational models, as well as the role of social entrepreneurship in advancing public administration and its potential policy impacts.
The talk was further enhanced by the inclusion of several case studies that demonstrated the practical applications of integrating social entrepreneurship concepts into public administration. These real-world examples provided attendees with a tangible understanding of the possibilities and challenges that arise when these two domains intersect.
