Teaching and Learning Professional Network (TLPN)

Background

The TLPN as approved by relevant University committees aims to revise the scope and funding support for Community of Practices (CoPs) to align with Lingnan University’s Strategic Plan 2022-28, specifically targeting priority areas and strategic initiatives focused on “developing Lingnan staff into leaders in innovative pedagogy” and “creating regional inter-university platforms to enhance research collaboration, publication, and Knowledge Transfer (KT)”.

The proposal is to combine (a) Faculty Pioneers (for staff), (b) Learning Innovation Community (for staff), and (c) Learning Analytics Community (for staff) into one TLPN effective Term 1, 2025-26.

 

Key Objectives

• Facilitate inter-institutional collaboration.The network will provide a platform for knowledge exchange and sharing best practices across institutions locally and regionally (including the Greater Bay Area), emphasising the integration of technology into teaching and learning;

• Share best practices across UGC-funded teaching and learning projects. The network will enhance the sharing of the deliverables across academic across UGC-funded projects such as the Fund for Innovative Technology in Education (FITE), the Inter-institutional Collaborative Activities (IICA) Scheme, Teaching Development Grant (TDG) and others within Lingnan University and with other UGC-funded institutions;

• Serve as a catalyst for fostering and supporting innovation and continuous improvement in teaching and learning pedagogies across academic units of Lingnan University; and

• Foster the use of analytics to inform instructional strategies and drive targeted action for improved student outcomes through evidence-based practices.

Key Deliverables

• 1 – 2 meetings and/or sharing sessions per academic year on the best practices resulting from various UGC-funded teaching and learning projects;
• Annual seminar to update new teaching and learning pedagogies with collaboration from universities locally and regionally (including the Greater Bay Area);
• 1 – 2 sharing sessions by members of TLPN per academic year after attending conferences or completion of projects; and
• Evaluate the use of data and learning analytics to improve teaching practices and learning outcomes.

Membership

• The Director of the Centre for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITAL) will act as the Convener
• Nomination of 3 members* by the Dean of each School/Faculty
• Each member will be included in the TLPN for 3 years
• The Secretary will be nominated by the CITAL Director

[* A total of 18 members from the six Schools and Faculties will be nominated. If a Faculty/School is unable to provide sufficient nominations, a vacancy will remain until the Faculty/School can submit additional nomination. Besides, one from each Faculty/School, including representatives from the three Faculties, School of Data Science and School of Interdisciplinary Studies, will serve as a member of the Sub-Committee on Teaching and Learning (SCTL).]

Funding Support

• In alignment with the current practice of the Faculty Pioneer Scheme, HK$20,000 (in the form of a special grant for research, conference attendance, and organising best practice sharing seminars) be granted to each member (i.e. a maximum of three awards, if there are three members from each School/Faculty ) to recognise and reward the members’ contributions to teaching and learning best practice sharing.  That is, a total of HK$360,000 across all six Schools/Faculties over three years (i.e. HK$60,000 for three members per School/Faculty).  Approval by the Director of CITAL is required for each subsidy. The CITAL one-line budget will cover any shortfall.

• Consistent with the practice of the Faculty Pioneer Scheme, any surplus funds, if available, will be carried forward to subsequent financial years. Besides, if a Faculty/School fails to provide sufficient nominations, the unallocated funds cannot be redistributed to existing members of the same School/Faculty to increase their funding support. Furthermore, any remaining funds will be transferred to a replacement member if an original member departs from the University or chooses not to continue serving. In all other cases, the CITAL Director will have the final authority to decide.

 

Procedures for Reimbursement

• Each nominee will be provided with a total of HK$20,000 over a period of three years, on a reimbursement basis.

• To claim reimbursement, the nominee should complete a Payment Application Form (CO/1039), which can be obtained from the Finance Office (FO) website. The form should be submitted to CITAL for approval, along with all necessary supporting documents, such as approval documents, invitation letters, and original invoices or receipts.

• CITAL will then forward the approved documents to the FO for payment processing. The nominee is advised to retain a copy of all materials for record before submitting them to the CITAL, if they wish.
