Mission and Objectives

The Department’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge in the fields of Sociology and Social Policy, following the principles of intellectual rigor, social relevance, and responsiveness to change.

Accordingly, we seek to fulfill three objectives:

  • Rigor : to offer broad-based undergraduate teaching and specialised postgraduate training, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in social research, and to constitute a reliable source of reference for policy makers and change agents
  • Relevance : to propose sustainable and innovative solutions to major social problems, to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between various stakeholders in tackling social issues, and to promote positive social change at the local, regional and global levels
  • Responsiveness : to address the diverse and changing needs of students, to explore new directions and frontier developments in social science, and to enhance liberal arts education and responsible citizenship in the twenty-first century
