Embracing the Spirit of Winter
Winter break in Hong Kong is a magical time, especially for students at Lingnan University. The break usually starts around late December and stretches until January 10th. This year, I enjoyed more than a full month off, allowing me to recharge after an intense semester.
Winter break feels fast paced for students heading back home to reunite with family and friends. For first-year students choosing to stay in Hong Kong, it can be different; many may grapple with homesickness. I remember feeling that way my first winter here. This year again, I and my friend remained in Hong Kong, and I found it to be a wonderful opportunity. Having spent last summer with my family helped me feel more comfortable this winter, allowing me to fully embrace the season.
For newcomers, it’s important to know that while homesickness is common, it often fades as you dive into the many experiences this city offers. Embrace the chance to discover and appreciate Hong Kong's beauty!

Interning and Learning
A significant part of my break was the internship I accepted through a professor at my university. Though not directly related to my major, I met wonderful people and learned that opportunities often exist outside your primary field.
My role involved engaging with nature through laboratory work and exciting field trips for collecting samples for research. It was a captivating experience, teaching me how much can be learned outside the classroom.

Fun Times with Friends
Winter break isn’t just about work; I filled my days with exciting outings. One memorable experience was my first time bowling with friends. While I focused on improving my technique, the challenge was fun with friends and rewarding.
Cycling is another passion of mine, and this break was no exception. The biking infrastructure in Hong Kong makes it easy to rent bikes and explore. I often cycle not just for exercise but to appreciate my surroundings and enjoy quiet moments. One stunning experience was cycling to a breathtaking bridge at sunset.
Afterward, my friend and I savored delicious burritos while enjoying the sunset and the joyful company around us. The atmosphere was perfect, and it felt great to unwind.

Celebrating New Year's Eve
New Year’s Eve was an interesting day during my break. My roommate and I tried ice skating for the first time. Despite the challenges, focusing on mastering the skill made it exhilarating. We offered tips as we navigated the rink, enjoying the challenge together.
After ice skating, we found a halal restaurant and enjoyed a big pizza that my roommate loves. The warm, cheesy delight was perfect for refueling before heading to Central for the countdown. The electric atmosphere was filled with anticipation as crowds gathered.
When the countdown began, we celebrated the start of a new year filled with possibilities.

Exploring the Hong Kong Space Museum
During my break, I revisited the Hong Kong Space Museum with a friend. We engaged with interactive exhibits that were both educational and entertaining. The planetarium was a highlight, transporting me through the world with stunning visuals and narratives.
The experience sparked my curiosity and left me in awe of the universe.

A Beautiful Hike
Hong Kong is famous for its stunning hiking trails, and I had to embark on one during my break. Shortly after the New Year, I hiked to Victoria Peak with friends. The hike began with the famous outdoor escalator, providing unique views of the bustling city.
As we transitioned onto the trail, the intensity picked up, requiring effort but allowing us to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings. Reaching the summit was a triumphant moment, with the panoramic view of Hong Kong making every step worthwhile.
At the top, charming shops and cafes are perfect for treating yourself after the rewarding trek. I took a moment to absorb the scenery while enjoying a desert as the sun began to set, creating a picturesque backdrop to a perfect day.

The Beauty of Everyday Moments
Reflecting on my winter break, I realize it was filled with exploration, learning, and connection with friends. Each experience taught me more about the rich culture of Hong Kong and helped me cultivate a deeper appreciation for the present moment.
For anyone considering spending their winter break here, there’s so much to discover—from the stunning skyline to the warmth of the people. Embrace new experiences, indulge in the beauty of everyday moments, and make unforgettable memories!
