Welcome to the Department of English! We combine literature and language and offer a stimulating campus environment, generating insights into language, culture, and communication in both local and global contexts. Our dedicated staff members have interests ranging from twentieth-century American literature to language in the media. We are active in research and our achievements were recognised as internationally excellent in Hong Kong’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise.

Our BACES programme develops key skills such as critical thinking, the careful analysis of texts and contexts, and the ability to communicate well in speech and writing. We encourage students to publish their creative work, to participate in extracurricular activities, and to seek out meaningful internship opportunities. BACES graduates can choose from a wide range of career and postgraduate study options.

Hong Kong is a fast-moving city and we have seen many changes. Something that remains constant on our BA Contemporary English Studies programme is the way we try to find time in our busy university lives – time to get to know our students, time to introduce them to our own interests and passions in language and literature, time to enjoy the beautiful campus and its surroundings. Above and beyond teaching knowledge and skills, we aim to help students appreciate the aesthetic values of literature and the power and beauty of language itself.
