Impact of Giving

Leveraging the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Research Matching Grant Scheme (RMGS), Lingnan University (Lingnan) has been actively expanding its research initiatives across diverse fields in recent years, and has amplified the impact of public donations, providing research teams with robust and sustainable resources to realise meaningful research outcomes and contribute back to society.

Led by Prof Lau Kin-chi from the Department of Cultural Studies, several research projects at Lingnan focus on deepening studies in ecology, peace promotion, and Global South cooperation. Among them, the “PeaceWomen Across the Globe” project is a major beneficiary of the research matching grant. This initiative concentrates on examining the roles and contributions of women worldwide in peacebuilding, aiming to advance women’s rights and gender equality. Through education, advocacy, transnational dialogue and collaboration, the project promotes the establishment of a culture of peace. 

Since receiving matching funding, the research team has not only strengthened its research capacity, but also established a unique mentorship model that fosters emerging researchers. The model encourages young talent to continue their involvement in research after graduation, fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer. The stable support from the research matching grant also allows the team to engage in long-term planning, effectively mitigating the impact of short-term funding fluctuations.

This remarkable research achievement was recently featured in an article published by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in the Hong Kong Economic Times, highlighting UGC’s recognition and support for Lingnan’s research capabilities and social contributions, further encouraging community support to jointly promote research innovation and social development.

Lingnan firmly believes that donations not only support academic research but also serve as a cornerstone for investing in the future well-being of society. The supplementary resources provided by the UGC’s RMGS multiply the value of every donation, becoming a vital force in driving innovation and societal progress. Lingnan is committed to partnering with the community to ignite more sparks along the path of education and innovation, creating deeper and more lasting social impacts.

//研究配對補助金「一變四」 點燃科研「薪火」締建社會效益

鼓勵社會各界 研究資源倍增
「在2025年的申請周期中，政府撥出3億元配對補助金，而參與的大學和院校更成功籌集到近9億元的非政府資金和捐款，實現『一變四』的強大槓桿效能，令政府的資助影響力大大倍增，為大學和院校的研究團隊提供更豐厚資源，有助推動更多卓越研究項目，進展令人鼓舞。」研資局主席唐偉章教授闡述，第二年配對工作如火如荼，當局預算今年及未來兩年持續投放共12億元，期望能為大學與院校額外帶來數以億計的研究資金，吸引更多民間資源投入科研工作。

公私雙管齊下 社會分享成果
拓寬資金渠道以外，唐教授強調配對計劃同時為大學與院校的研究方向帶來新視角，在與企業及非公營機構的協作中，不少由配對計劃所支持的研究項目，同時能協助企業、非公營機構或非政府組織開發新產品或服務，提升其應對巿場及社會的效能。這類公私營合作模式，令大學及院校的研究項目更能貼近市場和社會的需求。他補充，「大學與院校的學術研究亦應為社會創造價值，包括把知識轉化為對社會具應用價值的研究成果，積極回饋社會。透過配對計劃的推展，我們看到多間大學與院校的研究項目已達致可與社會分享成果的階段，有助提升企業生產力以至帶動公益事務的發展。」 //
