Lingnan University Basketball Team awarded the first runner-up in the Intercollegiate Basketball Competition 2024-25

The LU basketball team delivered an outstanding performance in the Intercollegiate Basketball Competitions 2024-25, fighting bravely from the group stage all the way to the finals. On 6 April, in the final match held at the Wan Chai’s Southorn Stadium, they were defeated 68-73 by the University of Hong Kong, making history by clinching the runner-up title.

The LU basketball team showed great strength throughout the tournament, defeating several traditional powerhouses along the way. They narrowly beat the Hong Kong Polytechnic University 88-87, triumphed over the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 87-81, and then secured a victory over the Chinese University of Hong Kong 78-76 in the semi-finals. Many LIFE students made significant contributions during the games, with Higher Diploma in Sports Coaching and Leadership first-year student CHUNG Chiwing, first-year student TSUI Chak Shing, and second-year student LIU Wei being key players. CHUNG Chiwing even received the “Assists Leader” individual award during the group stage matches.

In the final game, LU faced an initial setback, falling behind by 10 points at one stage. However, CHUNG Chiwing had a breakout period, scoring 9 points in a single quarter, while TSUI Chak Shing also contributed consistently, bringing LU within just one point of tying the score. In the second half, LU kept pressuring their opponents, with LIU Wei and TSUI Chak Shing once orchestrating an 8-0 run to tie the game at 42-42. Unfortunately, towards the end of the game, key players like CHUNG Chiwing suffered injuries, allowing HKU to capitalize on fast breaks and ultimately secure a 73-68 victory. Despite the loss, LU achieved a historic runner-up finish, showcasing their resilience and spirit.

Facing various traditional powerhouses, the LU basketball team was often underestimated before matches. Nevertheless, the players withstood the pressure and delivered one impressive victory after another, demonstrating their determination and tenacity, which is truly commendable. LIFE extends its congratulations to all the athletes and wishes the LU basketball team further success in the upcoming year as they strive for the championship title!
