Career Development in Mainland China

PENG Zijian (Graduate of 23-24)

Lingnan University has a strong academic atmosphere with many opportunities to participate in various academic activities. I often take part in these activities, whether they are academic lectures or exchanges with other universities in Hong Kong. The teachers in the CRS program have also been very helpful to me; they are very willing to discuss different issues with me. Each specialization in CRS has its own distinct characteristics. The research direction I chose, the Greater Bay Area studies, provided me with a valuable opportunity to visit and exchange ideas with South China Normal University. CRS has given me a completely new understanding of the discipline and specialization, allowing me to have a more comprehensive view of my research direction and life planning.

A year at Lingnan CRDS has been a time of simultaneous growth in academic abilities and career goals. The rigorous curriculum, attentive and responsible mentors, and training with an international perspective have allowed me to progress more solidly on the road to public service. For students aspiring to enter the public service sector, this place not only provides a professionally accredited 'stepping stone' but also cultivates genuinely useful policy thinking—this is what I most want to share.

My time studying CRDS at Lingnan University in Hong Kong was an incredibly valuable and fulfilling experience. The program's curriculum is distinctive, integrating interdisciplinary knowledge, allowing me to comprehensively and deeply understand issues related to China and the region. Participating in international academic conferences enabled me to listen to scholars from around the world share their latest research findings and engage in discussions with them, which not only kept me at the forefront of academia but also enhanced my academic communication skills.

The one-year master's program has made me more competitive and allowed me to be certified in political science, which has reduced some of the competitive pressure in participating in civil service examinations. The all-English instruction in the program has laid a solid foundation for my potential future work related to foreign affairs. Moreover, the presentations interspersed throughout the course have boosted my confidence in civil service interviews and enhanced my ability to think structurally and express complex ideas clearly. I consider it fortunate to study at Lingnan University in the CRDS program, as I have learned a great deal of new knowledge and broadened my international perspective. I believe this is an excellent platform for students who aspire to enter public service, allowing us to leverage our 'cross-sector' backgrounds to contribute unique value to regional development!
