Creative Teaching and Learning
In the HSM4005 Social Innovation and Social Enterprises course, the instructor meticulously designed an activity called "Wong Tai Sin Fire Response Challenge." This activity is aimed at allowing students to deeply understand and solve social issues through the application of design thinking. Students are organized into small groups of 3 to 5 people. They are tasked with designing and constructing the most effective temporary shelter for disaster victims using materials such as 20 to 30 toothpicks, paper, and pens within 40 minutes.
Through this activity, students are required not only to empathize with the needs of the disaster victims but also to engage in prototype design, testing, and iterative improvement to develop innovative solutions systematically. At the end of the activity, awards are given based on the total score of the shelter test, the most innovative solution, and the group that demonstrated exceptional teamwork. The awards are "Best Shelter Award," "Best Innovator Award," and "Best Teamwork Award," respectively.
This activity cultivates students' design thinking skills and innovative spirit and strengthens their interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork abilities. It enables students to transform abstract concepts into practical, creative solutions, laying a solid foundation for solving social problems in the future.
