SSC3319 Junior Research Project

The Junior Research Project (SSC3319) enables Year 3 and Year 4 students to conduct independent research on a health or social-services topic under the individual guidance of a faculty member, developing their research interests and skills in the process. Before taking this course, students must have completed the Research Methods course in their major. A project of sufficient quality may later be developed into a Senior Thesis (SSC4319).

 

 

Course Overview

This course is compulsory for Year 3 and Year 4 students. You will work with a supervisor through individual consultations, meeting at least four times per term to develop your research topic and methodology.

Steps for Registration and Securing a Supervisor (Terms 1 and 2)

  1. July/August 2026: Watch for the email from the Faculty of Social Sciences, which will circulate the JRP application form and the list of supervisors.
  2. Course registration: Register for the course on the online registration days (21–23 July 2026). Use CRN 1063 for Term 1 and CRN 1030 for Term 2. If the course has already been pre-registered for you on Banner, no further action is needed.
  3. Secure a supervisor: Review faculty members' research areas on the department website and approach a supervisor whose interests align with yours to discuss your research topic. 
  4. Submit the application form: Return the completed form to the Department Office by the last day of the Add/Drop period (7 September 2026).

Please note that supervisor places are limited. You are advised to make contact and confirm your supervisor early.
