Awardee for the Best Paper Award at the Postgraduate Conference on Interdisciplinary Learning 2024

Mr. HU Jiaxing, one of our PhD students of the Department of Translation, has been selected as an awardee for the Best Paper Award at the Postgraduate Conference on Interdisciplinary Learning 2024. The award grants him a scholarship worth HK$25,000 and the opportunity to participate in the Postgraduate Summer School Programme 2024, co-organised by Lingnan University and the University of Oxford.

The award-winning paper, titled “COVID-19 Science News from University Websites to Mass Media Outlets in Hong Kong”, explores the dissemination of science news related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. The research focuses on the role of research institutes and mass media in the shaping and transforming of COVID news originating from universities. It underscores the importance of understanding the flow of scientific information during global health crises.

This paper is an output of a research collaboration between Prof. LI Bo from the Department of Translation at Lingnan University, and Prof. Jack McMartin, the Director of Centre of Translation Studies at KU Leuven. Prof. LI is the co-supervisor of Jiaxing’s PhD programme. “Very honoured! The support from my supervisors and the Department has made this possible. They provide guidance as well as freedom in my PhD study. I am encouraged to explore whatever interests me. Science and news translation are not fields I had ever touched before, but I am granted opportunities and resources to do so. It is invaluable for me. This is the best reflection of the conference theme: interdisciplinary learning!”
