Overview

Aims

The programme aims to equip students with a deeper knowledge of Chinese literature and culture with an emphasis on creative writing. It also provides the students a solid training on Chinese literary research. The programme introduces students to a wide range of theoretical, literary, filmic and cultural texts of Chinese literature. It enhances professional development for those engaging in education, media and publishing industries.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Appraise modern Chinese literature under different historical context;
Apply writing skills in creative writings;
Reflect critically on a broader view of Chinese literature under the global context and comparative perspective with other bodies of knowledge and forms of arts;

Teaching Mode

Normally, courses would be delivered in Lecture-Tutorial mode. For creative writing courses, tutorials would be replaced by workshop.

Duration of Study

Full-time: Each academic year is divided into 3 terms, including first term (September - December), second term (January - May), and summer term (June - August). The duration of study would be 2-5 terms normally.

Time & Venue

Ful-time: Except for CHI502 Directed Thesis, all subjects would take 3 hours during weekdays and Saturdays on the Main Campus, mainly.

Progression Requirement (For 2025-26 Entry and afterwards)

An academic review will be conducted for students who have completed 6 or more credits at the end of each semester. Students with cumulative GPA less than 2.50 will only be allowed to continue their studies on a probationary basis. Besides, they will receive a warning letter if their cumulative GPA is above 2.50 but below 2.67, and their cumulative GPA must be raised to 2.67 or above after receiving the warning letter in order to graduate successfully.

In the following semester, if a probationary student fails to raise their cumulative GPA to 2.50 or above under the review, they will be required to withdraw from the programme. Additionally, they will receive a warning letter if their cumulative GPA is raised to above 2.50 but below 2.67, and their cumulative GPA must be raised to 2.67 or above after receiving the warning letter in order to graduate successfully.

As each student is permitted to be on probation only once throughout their entire study, if a student has previously been on probation and their cumulative GPA falls below 2.50 again, they will be required to withdraw from the program.

Most of the courses would be accessed by continuous assessment (40%, including tutorial performance and written reports) and final paper (60%).

Graduation Requirement

Students are required to take 30 or more credits within the duration of study and achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.67 or above in order to graduate. The maximum study period for full-time students is 2 years (including any periods of leave).

Degree Classification

Students who meet the graduation requirement would be awarded Master of Arts in Chinese Literature degree and classified into the following categories based on the cumulative GPA:
