- Application for Full-time Taught Postgraduate MA in Chinese Programme and MA in Chinese (Global Chinese Studies) Programme in Academic Year 2027-28 start from 01/09/2026, till 15/05/2027.
The Programme is supported by Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies (FTSS) in academic year 2025-26. Under the FTSS, awardees are required to pay HK$50,000 tuition fee and the differences will be subsidised by the scholarship subject to a cap of HK$100,000 for each student for the whole TPg programme, regardless of the actual study period of the programme and mode of study.
The Programme was supported by Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme. Under the TPgFS, awardees are required to pay a minimum tuition fee of HK$42,100, which is the prevailing rate of the UGC-funded programme, and the remaining balance will be subsidised by the fellowship subject to a cap of HK$120,000 for each student for the whole programme, regardless of the mode of study and actual study period.- Application of Part-time Taught Postgraduate MA Programme has no longer been accepted since AY 2018-19.
Entrance Requirements
Applicants for admission to the programme should:
- hold a relevant bachelor’s degree awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or
- have obtained an equivalent qualification; and
- meet the requirement of English language proficiency; and
- be interviewed by a panel consisting, of the Programme Director, the Associate Programme Director and other teachers involved in the programme
English Language Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose bachelor's degree or, exceptionally, an alternative qualification deemed equivalent from a tertiary institution is not using English as the medium of instruction (MOI) for the programme should obtain:
- a minimum score of 60 (internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)¹; or
- a band score of 6.0 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)¹; or
- a minimum score of 450 or above in the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6), with proof of competency in spoken English2.
¹ For IELTS and TOEFL qualifications for admission purposes, the University accepts only results from a single test sitting. The test must be conducted at a recognised test centre and fall within the two-year validity period, counted from the date of submission of the admission application for the specific intake cohort.
2 For CET-6 results submitted for admission purposes, the University accepts only those obtained within the five-year validity period, counted from the date of submission of the admission application for the specific intake cohort. Applicants must also demonstrate competency in spoken English through an oral interview conducted by the Programme and/or obtain grade B or above in the CET-6 Speaking English Test.

The programme will be open for application from September of this year to mid May of next year, with the academic year commence in next year's September.

Fee
Application fee: HKD400 (Non-refundable)
Student Visa application fee (applicable to non-local students): HKD700
2026-27 intake full-time programme fee: HKD16,000 for every 3 credits, total HKD160,000 for taking 30 credits as programme requirement. Total tuition fee is to be paid in two installments, with the first due before commencement of studies and the second due before the end date of first term.
2027-28 intake full-time programme fee: HKD17,500 for every 3 credits, total HKD175,000 for taking 30 credits as programme requirement. Total tuition fee is to be paid in two installments, with the first due before commencement of studies and the second due before the end date of first term.
Graduation fee: Full-time student should pay HKD600 by the start of first term.
* Full-time Chinese or English teach can apply for Professional Development Incentive Grant Scheme for Language Teachers from Standing Committee on Language Education and Research.
Reminders for Non-Local Applicatants
- Applicants from Mainland China, Macau, and Taiwan who are provisionally admitted to this program must apply for an entry permit or student visa through the department to the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Mainland Chinese applicants are also required to apply for a travel permit and the relevant endorsement to Hong Kong at the Exit-Entry Administration Office in their place of residence. Formal admission will only be granted upon completion of these procedures.
- According to the current immigration policy, Mainland students who have completed a recognized full-time bachelor's degree or higher program at a UGC-funded institution in or after 1990 may apply to work in Hong Kong. However, this arrangement does not apply to Mainland students enrolled in part-time programs.
