Onting received his Bachelor of Cognitive Science degree from The University of Hong Kong (HKU). This program focuses on various disciplines related to the human mind, including cognitive and perceptual psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics, neuroscience, and philosophy. Following completion of his bachelor's degree, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in cognitive psychology from the same university. During his PhD studies, Onting's research primarily concentrated on visual perception.
Before joining Lingnan University, Onting worked for ten years at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University College of Professional and Continuing Education, where he served as the Program Leader for the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Psychology program.
