Upgrade of Wi-Fi Infrastructure in SEK

The current Wi-Fi infrastructure in SEK, including WHC and WJY Halls, was established in 2011. By 2024, it will be over 12 years old. Recognizing the critical need for a robust and high-speed internet, especially for online learning, the University has secured funding from the University Grants Committee (UGC) in August 2022 to modernize SEK’s Wi-Fi system. This enhancement was successfully completed in the summer of 2024.

The comprehensive upgrade features the implementation of the cutting-edge Wi-Fi 6E standard across all access points, the modernization of network switches, and the addition of extra access points throughout SEK.

Wi-Fi Access Points: The total number of access points has risen from 427 to 566. Every bedroom now has its own access point, and the number has been doubled in shared spaces like halls, classrooms, and offices. This expansion ensures that staff, students, and residents experience a more reliable, capable, and efficient Wi-Fi service.

Latest Wi-Fi 6E Standard: The upgraded Wi-Fi infrastructure adopts the latest Wi-Fi 6E technology, which operates on the new 6 GHz band. This advancement enhances Wi-Fi 6 features, offering improved efficiency, increased data rates, better security, and reduced interference. It also integrates contemporary technologies such as AI, ML, Microservices, and Big Data Analytics, paving the way for a new era of wireless service scalability and performance. Additionally, the system incorporates AIOps, which autonomously detects and resolves issues beyond human capability, providing detailed diagnostics and solutions.

Multigigabit Capability: Addressing the exponential growth in the use of mobile devices and IoT, along with the surge in data-intensive tasks over wireless networks, now all ports of SEK network infrastructure support Multigigabit Ethernet (compliant with the IEEE 802.3bz standard), delivering 2.5GbE and 5GbE PoE power speeds to accommodate the soaring demand for bandwidth.
