From Nervous Arrival to Lifelong Bonds
When I first arrived at Lingnan, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. I came with little idea of the unimaginable experiences that awaited - the people I would meet, the friendships I would build, and how much I would come to discover about both the world and myself. I was fortunate to have really cool roommates, and quickly connected with others living in the short wing of Hostel A - many of whom remain my close and dearest friends to this day.
We spent many nights unwinding with tea and good conversation. I specifically remember coming back to the room several times after evening classes or basketball training, and there would be a group of friends sitting together already deep into a fun conversation. Also, I was able to feel the importance of a welcoming and warm student community. These wholesome times made hostel life feel like home.
From Studies to Adventures Together
I met some truly special people along the way - with remarkable backgrounds and experiences that continually inspired me. I treasure the time we shared: growing together through our studies, the madness of Lan Kwai Fong, travelling Asia, and exploring the hidden gems in Hong Kong, and now supporting one another as we step into the next stage of our careers. I was so grateful that Lingnan provided exceptional student-related travel opportunities which enabled me to be a part of two university collaboration projects in Singapore and the Philippines, as well as a semester abroad at ESSCA School of Management in Paris, France.
These programs were really incredible as they enhanced my cultural and interpersonal perspectives, while equipping me with technical insights and life experience that extends beyond the classroom. During my exchange in France, aside from the everyday beauty and lifestyle, I get goosebumps when I remember la fete de la musique and going deep into the Catacombes!
Lingnan Memories Beyond Words
I've come to realise that every student's journey is unique, but I've also witnessed firsthand just how much growth - in character, perspective, and life experience can unfold in a single semester, let alone a full year. There are too many moments to capture in one blog post. Every time I talk to friends who are no longer at Lingnan, the wave of nostalgia hits, as the best memories and feelings are the hardest to put into words.
Lingnan is special in how it brings people together, and the sense of student connection is positively unique. I believe that this atmosphere also contributes to students forming deeper and lasting friendships. I am still in contact with many of my close friends from my first year at Lingnan, and I sense that our connection will last going forward. It is a very cool feeling when you re-connect with friends from LU. I had this experience during my exchange in France, and also have had friends come back to Hong Kong to visit multiple times. This is really a special feeling.
The Time of Your Life at Lingnan
Before I came to Hong Kong and arrived at Lingnan University, two childhood friends told me: “you’re going to have the time of your life”.
It has really been this way since day one. I wish that the next generation of students will continue to study with purpose, be kind without interest, and lift one another up in both the good and bad moments. Recognize that everyone carries a unique story, resist the urge to judge too quickly.
Above all, take good care of your wellbeing and cherish your family bonds. Approach learning with urgency, whether in class or life itself. Never give up!
