From Yakutia’s Cold to Hong Kong’s Warmth
Reflecting on how studying in Hong Kong has impacted my personal development and perspectives. I am from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It is the biggest and coldest region in Russia. The minimum temperature can reach up to -70 degrees.
Studying abroad has always been my dream since childhood. Hong Kong became the perfect choice for me because it represents two distinct cultures: Western and Asian. Also, the education system in Hong Kong is considered very qualified.
A Scholarship Journey into Sociology
My primary interest was the Sociology and Social Policy Department, specifically in the Sociology major. I was very excited when I was accepted into Lingnan University with a full scholarship. I knew that Lingnan is very generous to its students and offers a plethora of opportunities, such as exchange programs, internship experience, and engaging extracurricular activities. It is an excellent chance to challenge myself and get a competent degree. After arriving in Hong Kong, I began the process of adapting. Personally, it was not so difficult for me because I have always dreamed about moving abroad and building my own daily routine.
Adapting with Joy at Lingnan
After arriving in Hong Kong, I began the process of adapting. Personally, it was not so difficult for me because I have always dreamed about moving abroad and building my own daily routine. So, if you are a very independent person, don’t be scared! The first days were full of enjoyment, with visits to different sights, local food, and so on.
My courses are exciting and valuable for my major. I registered for five classes, and each taught me to be more creative and think broadly. The professors are very friendly and polite, and I immediately saw how passionate they are about their work. I am waiting for the next term to get to know other professors!
From Roommate Bond to Global Friendships
The social adaptation was more complex than a general one. However, I got along easily with my roommate, and now I have a friend group of students from different countries.
Thanks to the Office of Student Affairs events, I have become more communicative and proactive with others. Thus, I started actively posting on Instagram (@ciyeniss, where you'll find helpful tips for students!) and had the chance to meet people outside of university.
Trust Yourself, Transform Abroad
To conclude, I underwent a significant transformation of my personality in Hong Kong and at Lingnan University. I started doing something I was afraid to do in my home. I became braver, more active, more disciplined, and more ambitious than ever! As a piece of advice, trust yourself and your choices. Confidence and determination begin with trust. You will succeed. And I am waiting for you at Lingnan University!
