Biography

Dr Bradley R Barnes is Professor, Special Advisor to President on Internationalization and Director of Global Education.  Prior to joining Lingnan University, Bradley was Dean and Professor at the School of Business of the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. He also served concurrently as Chair of Global Exchange prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Before residing in Hong Kong he was the Assistant Dean of Research and Professor of International Management & Marketing at Sheffield Business School and prior to that was Associate Dean for Internationalisation and Professor of International Management & Marketing at the Sheffield University Management School. His first professorial appointment was as the Hong Kong Alumni Endowed Chair Professor in International Management at the University of Kent.

Before joining academia, Professor Barnes spent over ten years working closely with enterprise, having been employed for both a Chamber of Commerce and a national medical trade association. In these roles, he travelled extensively, working in Europe, the Middle East (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman) and the Far East (Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong). Since joining academia Dr Barnes continued to engage with government and industry, delivering a series of programmes to support overseas business expansion for UKTI (London and the South East). He has also worked on two funded international projects, one in collaboration with the Chinese government and the other to promote a Sino-Anglo business incubator centre for a China Town development.

In the academic field, Dr Barnes is a leading scholar in international markets and business. He has published in all the leading IB and international marketing journals including the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of International Marketing, Management International Review, International Business Review, International Marketing Review and International Journal of Advertising among many others. Based on his international expertise, Professor Barnes served as External Assessor for Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University's (Suzhou campus) Periodic Review and subsequently was an External Examiner for them. Dr Barnes is fluent in French and enjoys working hard to improve his Mandarin Chinese.

Abstract

Drawing on earlier presentations in this series, I wish to share with colleagues and students a little bit about my upbringing. Proud to be from one of the poorest districts in Sheffield, England and going to the 3rd worst school in the entire county, I will share with you some anecdotes relating to my life and draw somewhat on motivational theory. Firstly, I will illustrate my rather unexpected journey, before, perhaps and more seriously, trying to enthuse you with some of my research endeavours. Finally, I wish to try and offer some insights for our research students and early career scholars that I hope can help them on their journey. I wish you can come and join us and enjoy this session, which I dedicate to my mum (of late) and my industrious father!
