LEAP Activity: Learn Cantonese, Spread Warmth @ Lingnan (學粵語, 傳溫情@嶺南) – Fostering Language Skills and Community Care through Meaningful Engagement (只提供英文版本)

In October and November 2025, the LEAP Programme under the School of Graduate Studies (GS) at Lingnan University proudly hosted two sessions of “Learn Cantonese, Spread Warmth @ Lingnan (學粵語, 傳溫情@嶺南)”. This heartfelt initiative provided students who had previously participated in “Survival Cantonese” courses (a Cantonese learning class) with the opportunity to apply their language skills in real community settings. At the Tin Shui Wai Elderly Neighbourhood Centre and the Tuen Mun Yan Oi Tong Community Centre, students engaged warmly with senior residents through conversations in Cantonese, creating joyful interactions that bridged generations and cultures.

The first session, held on 22 October at the Tin Shui Wai Elderly Neighbourhood Centre, featured interactive activities including towel exercises and the use of stress balls. These activities not only enhanced students’ Cantonese communication abilities but also conveyed genuine warmth and care to the elderly participants. The atmosphere was lively and affectionate, filled with mutual respect and heartful connection.

Building on this success, the second session took place on 6 November at the Tuen Mun Yan Oi Tong Community Centre. During this session, students further strengthen their Cantonese skills through meaningful conversations with the elderly, focusing on practical guidance such as smartphone usage and safety tips. This interaction empowered the senior participants to enhance their digital literacy, while allowing students to deepen their understanding of social responsibility and community engagement.

Participants from both sessions expressed sincere appreciation for the experience. Many shared that the activities not only strengthened their language proficiency but also broadened their cultural awareness and fostered a stronger sense of belonging within the local commitment.

The LEAP Programme remains dedicated to nurturing students’ linguistic and intercultural skills while fostering community connections through initiatives like “Learn Cantonese, Spread Warmth @ Lingnan”. These activities exemplify the spirit of applying knowledge for social good and building a compassionate, inclusive society.
