In November 2025, the Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) Programme at the School of Graduate Studies (GS) successfully partnered with The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong to conduct the “Mental Health First Aid Course cum Ambassador Programme (精神健康急救課程暨大使計劃)”. This certified programme attracted around thirty motivated learners to participate in an interactive and experiential training designed to foster practical understanding.

The course focuses on mental health education, teaching participants how to identify emotional issues, communicate effectively, and manage crises. Participants learn to be reliable supporters until professional help is available.

Reflecting on her learning experience, Ms Li Yufan, a student in the Master of Philosophy in History, shared, “The programme transformed how I view mental health. I now understand that saying 'don't be sad' is like telling someone with a cold not to cough — emotions can’t simply be turned off.  I also discovered how powerful non-judgmental listening can be in creating a safe space and acknowledge their feelings.”

Sharing his perspective, Mr Chen Siyuan, a student in the Master of Social Sciences in Applied Psychology programme (with a concentration in Counselling Psychology), shared, "This course is perfect. It deepens my understanding, provides valuable opportunities for practical application, and is easy to follow. The instructor is excellent and approachable."

When asked about her experience, Ms Lyu Lansun, also from the Master of Social Sciences in Applied Psychology programme (with a concentration in Counselling Psychology), shared, “I find this course very helpful in understanding how and what to do when someone needs help. I appreciate the opportunity offered by the School of Graduate Studies.”

The GS LEAP Programme remains committed to enriching students' learning experiences and fostering cultural exchange through similar initiatives in the future. These efforts not only enhance language skills but also deepen appreciation for the diverse cultures that shape Hong Kong. Additionally, by integrating mental health education into these initiatives, the programme aims to create a supportive environment that promotes well-being and resilience among students. This holistic approach prepares students to thrive in an interconnected world, equipping them with the skills to address mental health challenges and cultivate a caring community.
