On 6 March 2026, the Learning Enhancement and Aspiration Pathways (LEAP) programme, under the School of Graduate Studies, successfully held "Recipes of Memory: How Traditional Food Connects Hong Kong’s Past and Future". Over 30 students, together with elderly volunteers, gathered to share food memories and life stories, exploring the rich heritage and heartfelt stories behind Hong Kong’s culinary traditions.

This meaningful activity provided postgraduate students a valuable opportunity to listen to heartfelt recollections from elderly volunteers, deepening their appreciation of Hong Kong’s traditional culture and core values, while discovering the rich traditions and unique flavours of classic local snacks.

Peter Achem Shaibu, a student in the Master of Science in Health Analytics and Management programme, shared, “This programme offered an insightful exploration of how traditional Hong Kong snacks preserve collective memory and cultural identity. I especially appreciated how older adults connected everyday snacks to history and intergenerational relationships. Overall, it was an engaging and thought-provoking session that deepened my understanding of local snacks as a bridge between Hong Kong’s past and future. I'm glad I didn't miss this opportunity to discuss with elderly volunteers and my peers.”

Liu Jiali, a student in the Master of Social Sciences in Health and Social Services Management programme, expressed her appreciation, “Thrilled to join the event today! Tasting childhood classics like wife cakes, chicken biscuits and egg tarts instantly brought back memories of Chinese New Years, when my mum took us to traditional pastry shops. Sharing these treats and childhood stories with teachers, classmates and elderly volunteers made me truly feel how traditional food weaves Hong Kong’s past and future together—carrying local flavours and warm memories across generations.”

The event fostered authentic intergenerational dialogue, strengthening cultural connections and mutual respect within the community. It not only promoted cultural preservation but also built meaningful bridges between the younger generation and their elders.

Heartfelt thanks to every participant! LEAP remains committed to supporting postgraduate students in embracing cultural heritage and fostering community spirit.
