Details
The development of lacquer art in China can be traced back to 6,000 BC. This exquisite and complex craft requires a long production process and strict environmental control; hence lacquerware has always been a luxury for the middle and upper classes’ daily consumption. Nowadays, rather than an everyday utensil, lacquerware is primarily considered a traditional handicraft that is becoming increasingly rare.
This workshop aims to help participants understand the characteristics of raw lacquer sap and the process of the basic decorative productions, including coating, pattern design, and eggshell inlay techniques. The participants can have hands-on experience of lacquer art techniques, decorating by their own choice a bracelet, a spoon or a small dish, which they may then take home with them.
Workshop duration: 120 minutes
Content:
- Introduction to the history and cultural significance of Chinese lacquer art
- Demonstration of Chinese lacquer art decoration, including mother-of-pearl inlay, eggshell inlay, and gold powder decoration
- Demonstration of grinding and polishing techniques
- Eggshell inlay technique experience (one piece of lacquerware*)
*As lacquer products need to go through a natural drying process, participants can only collect the finished products ten working days after the workshop, either in person at the exhibition hall or through SF Express. Notifications will be sent via WhatsApp or email.
