Impact of Giving

The innovative social impact project “Link Sound Sinfonia (LSS)” at Lingnan University embodies the motto, "We Connect People with Music". This initiative strives to create a platform that is Diverse, Inclusive, and Equal (DI&E), uniting musicians from all walks of life to create a positive influence within communities.

Initiated and coordinated by the Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit (WBLMP) at Lingnan University and generously sponsored by the AR Charitable Foundation, LSS aims to provide music teaching training to individuals from various backgrounds and with different music abilities, and offer interaction opportunities to individuals, including those with physical, mental, and intellectual disabilities (PWD) and special educational needs (SEN), thereby embracing diversity and inclusion.

Prof Ip Kim-ho, Head of Lingnan University’s WBLMP and Professor of Practice, emphasises that the project’s primary objective is to promote community inclusion and empowerment while enhancing the social benefits of physical and mental health through music. Over the past three years since its establishment in 2021, LSS has engaged a diverse group of 60 Lingnan students, 15 professional music instructors and 30 secondary school students with special learning needs. This collaborative effort has fostered a vibrant community through a shared passion for music.

Lingnan students from various disciplines undergo a two-month training programme before being paired with professional music instructors to teach SEN participants about electronic music composition, Chinese and Western instrumental performance, and choral singing. As Prof Ip explained, the objective is not to impart music knowledge or performance skills but to encourage youths to develop essential soft skills, such as patience, empathy and communication, and to share the joy of learning music with diverse community members.

Johnny Mau, an LSS project member since his first year at Lingnan, has greatly benefited from this enriching learning environment. He was initially invited to join as a student intern and was awarded the AR Link Sound Sinfonia Scholarship. After graduating, he became the LSS Music Coordinator for a year. Through his involvement, Johnny has discovered the transformative power of music, which has significantly enhanced his communication skills and contributed to his personal growth. His journey exemplifies how participation in the arts can foster self-expression and build confidence—essential ingredients for growth in any individual.

The impact of LSS is touchingly illustrated through the stories of participants like Hugo Yik, a secondary school student with special educational needs. In the nurturing atmosphere created by the dedicated staff and students of Lingnan University, Hugo discovered a passion for music that has ignited his desire to share his insights with others. His transformation underscores the unique ability of music to break down barriers, foster connections and empower individuals.

Public performances organised by LSS serve as powerful platforms that not only showcase the talents of Lingnan students alongside external participants but also raise awareness of the capabilities of PWDs and SENs. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from audiences reflects a growing appreciation for the transformative power of music.

Prof Ip hopes for more societal support to enhance resources, allowing LSS to extend its reach and benefit even more individuals in need. By connecting people through music, Link Sound Sinfonia not only transforms lives but also strengthens community bonds. The project exemplifies the positive impact music can have on promoting personal growth, social inclusion and mental wellness.
