An Intellectual Journey Beyond Boundaries
In today's fast-changing world, where the complexity of our society and disruptive tech changes is the norm, relying on a single perspective is no longer enough.
At Lingnan, irrespective of our major, each of us needs to acquire the essence of humanities, business, social sciences, natural sciences, and digital technology. This interdisciplinary approach empowers us to address future social, personal, and professional challenges comprehensively and fearlessly.
Interdisciplinary Curriculum Structure
Every Lingnan undergrad is required to take ‘Common Core Courses’. These courses, designed by different academic units, introduce basic knowledge from various disciplines, sparking our curiosity for the mosaic of the known and the undiscovered.
In these classes, we will also engage with classmates from a variety of majors, each contributing their own unique perspectives. This exciting blend of ideas makes learning more inspiring and enjoyable.
The five Common Core courses are:
- Critical Thinking: Analysis and Argumentation (taught by Department of Philosophy)
- The Making of Hong Kong (taught by Faculty of Social Sciences)
- The Process of Science (taught by Science Unit)
- China in World History (taught by Department of History)
- Generative Artificial Intelligence (taught by School of Data Science)
Our 'Cluster Courses' present a diverse array of general education options that enhance our interdisciplinary thinking. They allow us to understand how various fields interpret and influence society. Designed to be both engaging and relevant, these courses delve into topics that impact our daily lives.
We are required to choose four courses from different categories:
- Creativity and Innovation
- Humanities and the Arts
- Management and Society
- Science, Technology, Mathematics and Society
- Values, Cultures and Societies

Mastering English language communication is essential for excelling in both university and future careers. At Lingnan, each student is required to complete four courses focused on enhancing English language skills and professional communication. These intensive courses train us to speak, write, and communicate in English skillfully and efficiently.
If you are from Hong Kong or Chinese Mainland, you may also be required to complete two courses in Chinese proficiency.
With Free Elective credits, we have the freedom to choose any courses we want, regardless of our major.
Pursuing our curiosity fuels intellectual growth and ignites a passion for lifelong learning. That's why the University gives us the autonomy to allocate about a quarter of our total credits to exploring and discovering new passions. These credits can also be used to pursue a minor or participating in global exchange programmes, fostering our ability to manage our academic plan independently.
