Interdisciplinary courses embracing Eastern and Western philosophy
Overview
The Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy programme is designed to introduce students to contemporary philosophy and acquaint them with the history of the discipline. It places particular emphasis on training students to be skilled at understanding, responding to, and developing philosophical arguments.
Designed and overseen by the Department of Philosophy, the programme provides a rigourous and balanced education, including instruction in analytical thinking, effective communication and writing skills, which are widely regarded as essential tools for success in the workplace.
More than intellectual training and development
In addition to exploring ideas from both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, the programme covers key areas of the discipline, including morality, theory of knowledge, and philosophy of mind and consciousness. The four-year undergraduate degree also enables students to further develop essential intellectual skills, such as critical thinking, problem analysis, and the ability to articulate complex topics with clarity and precision.

Flexibility in learning and subject options
Students must complete 48 credits of coursework in the major discipline, of which nine courses (27 credits) are from the philosophy category. They can take either seven elective courses (21 credits) or five electives (15 credits) in conjunction with a final-year project (6 credits). The project may be awarded three credits, after one term, if the student’s progress is not considered satisfactory. In such a case, the student will need to complete six elective courses, rather than five.
Extensive career potential in the region
Traditionally, philosophy graduates tend to go into education or the media as specialists valued for their knowledge of different viewpoints and cultural traditions. However, over the last fifteen years, a growing trend in the US and Europe has seen more companies hiring philosophy graduates for fast-track positions as problem solvers.

The philosophy curriculum at Lingnan is well-balanced. Students are acquainted with key philosophers in both Western and Chinese history. Also, various branches of contemporary philosophy are introduced. All courses are taught by professors who excel in presenting their insightful understanding with clear and rigorous analyses. The Philosophy Department at Lingnan has provided me with the opportunity to study with world-class philosophers. I learnt from them knowledge across numerous disciplines and, more importantly, a way of thinking. A solid foundation had been well laid back then for my current PhD studies. The skills we learn in Philosophy, which allow us to explain complex ideas with clarity and precision and to interpret difficult texts and issues, lend themselves to many careers and further studies. Also, in Philosophy we care about human life. A wide variety of questions and issues of fundamental importance are involved in the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and ethics.
