ABOUT CULTURAL STUDIES
With a focus on critical writing, media literacy and cultural innovation, the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Cultural Studies (BACS) is an interdisciplinary programme that cultivates caring change-makers for the digital age.
“Culture” refers to the ideas we hold and the common ways of life we share. In this programme, you will be trained to examine a broad range of sociocultural topics in local and cross-cultural contexts. You will become more knowledgeable and aware of the diverse values and lived experiences that shape our everyday life in the contemporary world.
Our flexible programme structure is industry-focused and skill-based. With the support of academic experts from cultural studies, sociology, education, media studies, literature studies, environmental studies, and history, you will learn how to critically analyse and reflect on the complex interplay between individuals and society and apply current theories to real-life practices through media production workshops, studio-based learning, capstone projects and internships.
This programme is ideal if you want to:
- enhance your competency in research creation, cultural production, and digital storytelling
- advocate and contribute to a more open, sustainable and inclusive community
- pursue a career in non-profit, media, education, cultural or creative sectors

New Concentrations and Courses
Starting from 2023-24, BACS students can declare a concentration in either “Cultural Commons, Social Innovation, and Creativity” or “Digital Culture and Media Practices” as part of the 4-year curriculum.
The “Cultural Commons, Social Innovation, and Creativity” concentration equips students with the knowledge and skills to actively engage in social and cultural transformation. The “Digital Culture and Media Practices” concentration provides opportunities to gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge digital technologies and develop a nuanced understanding of the digital landscape.
These two concentrations enable BACS students to tailor their studies and delve into specialised areas of cultural studies.

Summer Internships (Programme Elective)
In addition to the Internship Programmes offered by the University, we offer a distinctive cultural studies internship programme that allows students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world social and professional settings. Our internship partners span diverse sectors, including news media, film companies, social service organizations, and community centres such as:

Additionally, our connections extend to theatre companies, museums, and cultural organisations associated with the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) and M+ projects.
International Exchange
Students have the chance to broaden their academic horizons with diverse perspectives and cultural immersion through engaging in a one-term study exchange in overseas countries or Mainland China, offered by Student Exchange Programmes or the ACUCA Student Mobility Scheme. Our programme has a notable track record of successful exchange applications by our students.

The memories from Cultural Studies classes and activities are my lifelong treasures. The professors and classmates foster an environment of openness and kindness, where expressing personal views is both welcomed and respected. This learning atmosphere is intellectual, yet relaxing and joyful. The alumni sharing sessions, facilitated by encouraging and supportive alumni, stand out as particularly rewarding experiences, offering valuable insights and workplace advice. After years of studying in Cultural Studies, we became more curious about social phenomena and social groups, and more sensitive to the motivations and power dynamics behind them. The education in Cultural Studies equips us with the analytical skills to dissect those complexities and enhances our ability to conduct fieldwork observations and interviews.
The curiosity and sensitivity nurtured in Cultural Studies prompt me to explore the social group of migrant domestic workers with an empathetic approach, through avenues such as research project and internship at MFMW (Mission For Migrant Workers). These explorations enable me to realize and admire their determination to strive for a better future for both their families and themselves.
