SCE4003: Sports and Health for Aging and Special Population

Promoting Wellness Through Innovative Sports

In the course SCE4003, students engaged in transformative Service-Learning projects aimed at enhancing the health and wellness of various communities, including female domestic migrant workers, multicultural housewives, elderly residents, and individuals with intellectual disabilities. Each group faced unique challenges: migrant workers, often burdened by the physically demanding nature of their jobs, struggled with flexibility and pain management. Meanwhile, elderly residents required support for physical fitness and mental wellness. The students assessed these needs and designed tailored programs to empower participants, fostering resilience and community connection.

The sport activities organised by students included innovative and relatively new options for the Hong Kong community, such as Zumba and kubb for the elderly, promoting social interaction and physical activity. For migrant domestic helpers, Yoga was incorporated to address their needs for flexibility and pain relief. Additionally, students introduced taspony for SEN students, encouraging teamwork and coordination. Each activity was thoughtfully crafted to meet the physical and emotional needs of the beneficiaries, showcasing the profound impact of introducing these uncommon sports in promoting health and community engagement.
