Curating Art Exhibition FVA4006
This is a practice-based curating course at DACI. For this course, students will act as art curators and organise an exhibition, either physically or virtually.
Course Description
This course examines key themes concerning the changing role of the curator and the diversity of exhibition venues such as museums, art spaces and site-specific contexts in the contemporary world. Case studies are used to illustrate the roles of curator, artist, and educator in the projects of exhibition design, interpretation, evaluation, and audience development. Exhibition visits and guest lectures are arranged to engage art and museum practitioners in dialogue with students.
The course provides students who have already completed one art history course an opportunity to produce a real exhibition. Each group of students will design an exhibition plan, conduct research on selected objects, and acquire practical curatorial skills, while producing interpretative and publicity materials for an exhibition in a physical venue or a digital platform.
Previous Exhibition Projects
Prof. Ho Selina teaches and researches in art, curatorial and museum studies. She completed her PhD on an International Research Scholarship at the Asia Institute of the University of Melbourne. She also earned an MA in Museum Studies from the School of Museum Studies of the University of Leicester and an MA in Literary and Cultural Studies from The University of Hong Kong. Her articles appeared in international journals and edited books. Her monograph, Museum Processes in China: The Institutional Regulation, Production, and Consumption of Art Museums in the Greater Pearl River Delta Region (2020), and edited volume, Exhibiting Chinese Art in Asia: Histories, Politics, and Practices (2025), were published by Amsterdam University Press.
Prof. Ho completed her professional training at the Burrell Collection of the Glasgow Museum in UK. Before entering academia, she had held curatorial and managerial positions at various arts institutions and museums in Hong Kong. She has curated exhibitions such as “Sensing Things,” “Dialogues: Post-1997 Art Documentation Exhibition,” “Reverse Reality–the United States and Hong Kong Young Artists Exchange Project,” “Re-orientation” exhibition for Heritage×Art×Design, “Degeneration Art Exhibition,” and “The Future of School Architecture.”
