Press Conference: The Survey of Family Relationships and Mental Health among Caregivers Living in Subdivided Flats (30 Apr 2024)
 

On the eve of May Day (April 30th, Tuesday), Prof. Ruby Lai, Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, together with Prof. Crystal Chan Ying from the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Concerning Subdivided Units Alliance, held a press conference on the survey of family relationships and mental health among caregivers living in subdivided flats. During the period between October 2023 and April 2024, they conducted questionnaire interviews with 317 caregivers living in subdivided flats to understand their mental health status and life satisfaction, and analyzed the impact of housing conditions on individual health and family relationships.

The survey revealed that caregivers living in inadequate housing had low satisfaction with their living conditions. In situations where the living environment is cramped, poorly ventilated, and lacking in hygiene and safety, caregivers have to engage in "living labor" to cope with the deficient living environment, which increases their physical and mental burden.
