The three years that I spent at Lingnan University pursuing my PhD were the most rewarding and gratifying time in my life. My extensive discussions about my research with professors and my fellow graduates, late nights in the library digging into historical archives, and interactions with undergraduates laid the foundation for the research and teaching career that I am currently engaged in.
 

One of the most heart-warming experiences during my study was the constant encouragement and supports I received from professors which helped me shape and materialize the initial, blurred idea of my research. My research project lay in the intersection of film studies, translation studies, and Chinese literature. Such interdisciplinary work could not have been completed without the generous support that I regularly received from professors from different departments, including Visual Studies, Chinese, Translation, and Cultural Studies. In addition, DACI(formerly known as VS) is home to a strong film and media community. Conferences, talks, and film exhibitions hosted by DACI and Centre for Film and Creative Industries exposed me to the diversity, currency, and depth of cinema and media culture, which also gave me a chance to collaborate with my peers.
 

In addition to the intellectual encouragement, I received for my research, the material assistance I gained from the Fong Sum Wood library and the university were also very important. The library’s subscription to hundreds of volumes of precious historical archives that I needed were crucial in helping me to complete my research and thesis.

Additionally, my most enriching experience included working as a teaching assistant, which allowed me to interact with undergraduate students both inside and outside the classroom. It further exposed me to range and the breadth of local culture and enhanced my communicative and teaching skills.
 

Three years of learning and teaching experience in DACI not only helped me make the first steps of my academic career, but also awarded me with the ability, horizon, and skills that are necessary to continue it.
