The liberal arts curriculum of the Visual Studies programme has helped me to be open-minded and curious about cross-subject topics as I have realised that things are more inter-connected than I thought.

I took advantage of internship and volunteer opportunities that allowed me to explore ideas, reflect on what I value and what I don’t, and understand my own strengths and weaknesses.

Bachelor Degree (2022)

The liberal arts curriculum of the Visual Studies programme has helped me to be open-minded and curious about cross-subject topics as I have realised that things are more inter-connected than I thought. Different experiences at the university have prepared me for the transition, from learning how to budget while living in the student accommodation to working in different organisations which have given me expectations in a workplace context. More importantly, I have found the role models to emulate and develop expectations for who I want to become. 

 

Throughout my studies in visual studies, I have been grateful to work with so many supportive and talented people. I enjoyed working as a research assistant for Prof. Selina Ho. I learnt a lot about formal research. I also enjoyed working as a helper at the Hong Kong Arts Center. I have made some connections and gained exposure in a very interesting field: intangible heritage culture in Hong Kong.


In addition, I took advantage of serval internship and volunteer opportunities that allowed me to explore ideas, reflect on what I value and what I don’t, and understand my own strengths and weaknesses. All of these experiences have shaped the way I think about life, which for me is still a constantly evolving journey.

After graduation, I pursued an Msc in computing and information systems in the United Kingdom. Then I managed to work working in the IT industry, focusing on application support development. Even it is a big switch, I have realized that skills and ways of thinking from one discipline can be transferred in surprising ways to another.


To my fellow schoolmates, enjoy your time at university, and make use of every opportunity to uncover your passions. Don’t be afraid of failing or being rejected. It is part of the process. As long as you reflect on the feedback or on yourself, it is still a positive experience. This can be applied to assignment writing, examination, job application and so on. Meanwhile, I recommend reaching out to the professors in the department as I’m sure they are supportive and will try their best to help and give advice.
