Continuous development of a smart campus with expanded IoT LoRaWAN coverage on the Main Campus and T-Plus

To support the deployment of IoT devices and build a smart campus, ITSC launched a new LoRaWAN infrastructure in 2025. This on-campus network provides low-power, long-range connectivity for hundreds of sensors, enabling cost-effective smart campus initiatives. 
 

Utilising this network, the University can monitor occupancy, foot traffic, energy usage, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), lighting, water leaks, and air quality to enhance sustainability and reduce maintenance overhead. The sensors' long battery life and broad coverage simplify installation across both indoor and outdoor spaces, including hard-to-reach areas. Furthermore, the network facilitates centralised management, while its open standards ensure easy integration and scalability. Currently, the University Library and OCDM are deploying various smart devices to support and optimize their daily operations.

ITSC is now extending network coverage to the new T-Plus campus and several areas where signal strength currently falls below −110 dBm. This expansion involves comprehensive signal strength surveys and the strategic deployment of new LoRaWAN gateways. The project is tentatively scheduled for completion in September 2026.
