Research Interests: Engineering sustainability: using multi-scale and multi-phase modeling, simulation, and experimental approaches to investigate various research frontiers in engineering science addressing real-world challenges in energy, environment, nanotechnology and biology. Recent research areas include scientific pathways of distributed carbon dioxide capture and utilisation, AI-driven design advanced materials, soft robotics, and flexible and viable batteries
About
Professor Chen Xi is a distinguished scholar in engineering science and sustainability, who addresses real-world challenges in energy, environment, nanotechnology and biology. As one of the international leaders who pioneered distributed carbon dioxide capture and utilisation, he has been extensively involved in scientific research and development related to carbon neutrality for more than ten years. Professor Chen obtained Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from Harvard University. Before joining Lingnan, he was a tenured Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering and the Director of Earth Engineering Center at Columbia University.
Professor Chen has published over 500 journal papers, and his papers have been cited for over 25,000 times with the H index of above 82. He was awarded the Career Award (CAREER) by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2008, which is the highest award officially awarded to young scholars by the US government. Professor Chen received the Sia Nemat-Nasser Early Career Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 2010, Young Investigator Medal from the Society of Engineering Science (SES) in 2011, and the Thomas J.R. Hughes Young Investigator Award from ASME in 2012. Professor Chen was elected as a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 2014 and has been a World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists published by Stanford University since 2019. He recently received the Outstanding Contribution Award from China Industrial Cooperation Association, and Distinguished Fellow from International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences (ICCES).
