Additional Requirements for MPhil/PhD in Data Science Programmes

All students enrolled in MPhil/PhD Programmes in Data Science are required to fulfil the following stipulated coursework requirements, which are 11 credits for MPhil students and 14 credits for PhD students:
 

  1. General Research Requirement: 

     a. RDSC510 Research Methods in Data Science (3 credits); and
     b. RWTS510 Academic Writing and Research Methodology across Disciplines (2 credits)

     

  2. Major Requirement:

    MPhil students are required to complete and pass a total of not less than 6 credits of graduate level courses before thesis submission, and PhD students are required to complete and pass a total of not less than 9 credits of graduate level courses before thesis submission. The course list will be determined and amended from time to time by the School of Data Science.
     

In relation to the fulfilment of the above requirements,

 

  1. Credit transfer is allowed for the “General Research Requirement” if a student has taken RDSC510 Research Methods in Data Science (3 credits) or an equivalent course and RWTS510 (2 credits) in his/her previous study in Lingnan University. If credit transfer is granted for either or both courses under “General Research Requirement”, the total required credits shall be deducted accordingly.

     

  2. Only 1-course credit transfer (3 credits) is allowed for the Major Requirement for PhD students. If credit transfer is granted, the student has to fulfil 6 credits for graduation.

     

  3. Credit transfer from another university or institution shall be considered on a case-by-case basis.

     

  4. When considering credit transfer applications, the study level, timeliness, and academic performance of the previously completed courses for which the transfer is being requested are factors to be considered. All recommendation for credit transfer should be submitted by the Supervisor concerned, endorsed by the Division Person-in-Charge, and approved by the Research and Postgraduate Studies Committee in Data Science. For course exemption/credit transfer for RWTS510, the approval rests with the University’s Postgraduate Studies Committee.
