I was truly enjoy the transformative academic journey that has been both intellectually stimulating and personally rewarding. The SAG programme’s well-structured curriculum and exceptional faculty have enabled me to gain valuable knowledge and deep insights into the multifaceted challenges and opportunities of societal ageing. Through focused study of specialised courses, I’ve developed a strong foundation in the theories and practices that underpin this growing field.

Lingnan University provides a serene and beautiful campus environment that fosters meaningful learning. Its modern infrastructure, combined with a vibrant community of student-led organizations, creates an enriching academic experience. The 24-hour access to the library and study rooms also supports a productive and flexible study routine, helping me balance academic commitments and self-directed learning.

One of the highlights of my postgraduate journey has been the practical experience I gained through an internship in my first semester, as part of the Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing in Place Project. During this internship, I engaged in educational outreach, sharing ageing-related knowledge with the general public, Lingnan students, and local primary and secondary school students. I also showcased gerontechnology products and explained their design principles and functionalities. Collaborating closely with elderly ambassadors enriched my understanding of ageing in real-world contexts and allowed me to form meaningful friendships with older adults.

These experiences not only deepened my academic knowledge but also helped me manage the demands of postgraduate study and independent living. The motivation and resilience I’ve gained continue to fuel my passion for contributing to the advancement of ageing and gerontology.

One of the major aspects of my experience at Lingnan University’s SAG was the unwavering support offered by lecturers. They were not only teachers; they became mentors who genuinely cared about my well-being and academic success. They employed an open-door policy that made me bold enough to visit them whenever I had an issue, either in comprehending complex topics or with personal matters. The commitment of the faculty to the success of students provided a supportive environment that was significantly responsible for my experience.

Also noteworthy was the sense of camaraderie I felt with my classmates. Being in a mixed cohort allowed me to learn alongside classmates with different backgrounds, each with their unique perspectives for sharing. Classmates were not just group assignment co-authors but also friends who gave emotional support. We held study sessions together, shared victories, and helped one another pass through obstacles, and this sense of belonging was invaluable.

As someone deeply committed to addressing the challenges of population ageing and exploring the potential of smart technologies, I chose to pursue the MSc in Smart Ageing and Gerontology at Lingnan University. I was drawn to the programme's intersection between academic inquiry and practical innovation, hoping to discover new ways to enhance the wellbeing of older adults and improve the efficiency of care systems. Hong Kong provides a compelling context for such exploration. This programme offers interdisciplinary training with a distinctly Asian perspective, equipping me to reimagine the future of intelligent healthcare and elder support.

One of the most pleasant surprises has been the extraordinary faculty, whose expertise spans social policy, psychology, nursing, and technological innovation. The caliber of teaching is truly impressive—many professors and lecturers are involved in policymaking, cutting-edge eldercare projects, and international research collaborations. They are more than instructors; they are mentors who guide us in bridging theory with practice. Particularly when engaging with topics such as how technology can support independent ageing and cognitive health, our professors and lecturers challenge us to think from diverse angles—ethical, cultural, and sustainable.

Firstly, the SAG course is jointly offered by Lingnan University and Hong Kong Metropolitan University allowing us to experience the different teaching resources and strengths of both institutions. This has provided me with a profound understanding of the challenges and opportunities related to population aging. The course has laid a solid foundation in gerontology for us, and we have also compared aging data and systems between mainland China and Hong Kong, broadening our perspectives on the social, psychological, and health aspects of aging.

One standout aspect is the emphasis on smart aging technologies and their applications in improving the lives of elderly individuals. At both LU and HKMU campuses, we have had the opportunity to closely observe various barrier-free facilities, assistive devices for the elderly, VR equipment, and more. Additionally, the professors have taken us to participate in exhibitions organized by charitable organizations, allowing us to explore innovative solutions and stay updated on the latest developments in the field.

After one year of study, the SAG program has provided me with an in-depth understanding of the process of population ageing and how to make the best use of advanced technology and adopt necessary policy measures to address the challenges posed by an ageing population, so as to help the growing number of elderly community to continue to enjoy healthy, independent, active and happy ageing life.

The program provides students with a number of practical venues where we have the opportunity to experience first-hand the aging technology products (assistive devices, rehabilitation equipment, biosensors, etc.) that improve the quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers. In the vulnerability studies course, apart from imparting to the students the knowledge and skills required to take care of the frail people, the professors will also invite lecturers from the gerontological service or research related industries to teach us, which will help the students to We will also invite lecturers from industries related to elderly services or research to help students broaden their horizons. Visits to ageing communities or nursing homes will also be organized to enable students to have a deeper understanding of the real feelings and needs of the elderly, and to contribute to solving the challenges of an ageing population in society and the world.
