We are delighted to announce that the second Harvard-Lingnan Symposium： “The Avant-Garde X Hong Kong and the New South” is going to be held on 4 and 5 December 2023, Hong Kong time, at the M+ Building, Hong Kong. The symposium is co-hosted by Professor David Der-wei Wang of Harvard University and Professor Zong-qi Cai, Director of The Advanced Institute for Global Chinese Studies at Lingnan University of Hong Kong.

We are honored to have invited eighteen distinguished scholars from renowned universities worldwide and three prominent Sinophone writers to explore the following themes:

Traced back to its etymological root, the avant-garde denotes the most advanced corps of an army; they are the ones at the very forefront who pioneer the march into unknown territories of a future that has yet to come. As its use was extended to the cultural realm, the avant-garde came to represent nothing but the most indefatigable confrontations of aesthetic productions with their times. Taking Hong Kong as its physical nexus and symbolic vantage point, the symposium aims to unearth the theoretical prospect of the avant-garde to bear upon the emerging discursive site of the “New South,” a derivative of the concept of “New South Writing” in recent Chinese literary studies. The “New” brings to the fore a revisionist perception of cultural productions taking place in land and oceanic spaces along and beyond China’s Southern corridors. But the “New” also implies a cultural subjectivity in formation – one that is in alignment with the convolutionality, mercuriality, and heterogeneity imbedded in the topology of the “South.” The unceasing fluctuation and unfolding of the “New South” heralds renewed undertakings of the avant-garde, who are time and again called upon to embrace and manifest ingenious interventions in response to their times.

嶺南大學與哈佛大學聯合主辦第二屆哈佛-嶺大學術研討會：「先鋒X，香港，與新南方」，將在香港時間12月4-5日於香港M+大樓召開，由哈佛大學東亞系暨比較文學系的王德威教授與嶺南大學環球中國文化高等研究院院長蔡宗齊教授共同主持。

本次研討會有幸邀請到來自海內外著名高校的18位專家學者和3位知名華語作家，深度探討以下話題：

「先鋒」（avant-garde）一詞原指軍事行動中的先發部隊，他們引領隊伍探向未可知的前程。先鋒一詞後被廣泛在文化界使用，標誌時代當下最具有實驗性的文學或藝術生產。本次研討會以香港為地理坐標和勘察視角，思索先鋒未盡的潛能，再以此探究近來在中國文學研究裡興起的「新南方」概念。「新」聚焦中國南方的土地與海洋，提出一種文化生產的新視角；「新」同時指向一種新生的文化主體性，蘊含著「南方」這一地理位置特有的迴旋、翻覆、多元性。在「新南方」不息的流動和展開之中，在時代的召喚之下，先鋒以全新的姿態顯現。
