From Lost in the City to Finding Myself–My Growth Story in Hong Kong

Scholarship, Friendship, and New Beginnings
I’m one of the first two Bhutanese students studying at Lingnan University. I feel incredibly honored and grateful for the full scholarship provided by Lingnan, which has opened doors to experiences I could only dream of.
Big shoutout to the staff, friends, and the entire Lingnan Family for making my first year of college not just a start, but an exciting chapter filled with growth and laughter.
The Adventures of My First Year–Lost and Loving It
My journey in Hong Kong wasn’t exactly a walk in Victoria Park–more like stumbling through it while trying not to trip over my own feet. Coming from Bhutan, a tiny, developing country, I had less exposure to big cities and their wild ways. So, as simple as navigating the MTR was challenging, forget about everything else–I was basically a lost puppy.
However, after several misadventures such as disembarking at the wrong station multiple times, I finally mastered the MTR routes. Now, I can navigate like a pro, but not without some hilarious missteps. One day, my friend and I unintentionally travelled through more than eight stations–not willingly, we just ended up exploring almost every corner of Hong Kong, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Who knew getting lost could lead to discovering hidden gems and building resilience?
Lingnan’s Unique Learning Opportunities, more than Just Books
Beyond navigating the city, Lingnan University offers some unique learning experiences you won’t find anywhere else, for instance, like the Integrated Learning Programs (ILPs). I said yes to every opportunity: two days of Global Leadership Training, survival Cantonese classes (which were more hilarious than helpful at first), and many more like volunteering to get a real taste of the culture.
And then there’s the Host Family culture–imagine a second family that cares and helps you survive your first Hong Kong winter. It was like having a home away from home, providing a supportive environment, bridging cultural differences, and creating a sense of belonging.
Additionally, being part of the Student Ambassador and Student Hostel Association wasn’t just a chance to serve but rare opportunity to develop leadership skills and build lasting friendships–experiences I am truly grateful for.
Discovering Beauty of Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a city of breathtaking contrasts and natural beauty. From the iconic Peak Tram ride to the scenic trails of Tai Mo Shan, historic Walled City, and the lively atmosphere of Kennedy Town, I discovered many amazing places which I have never dreamt of. Although I am not particularly fond of crowded places, Hong Kong’s natural scenery and well-preserved hiking trails became my sanctuary.
Nature became my new hobby–hiking, exploring, and finding quiet moments, which in fact I first discovered in Hong Kong, amid the hustle. It made me realize that this city isn’t just a place for work and study, but for self-discovery especially during this very crucial part of my life, even if you’re just trying not to get lost again.
Beyond the Classroom Learning
My most unforgettable experience was participating in the Joint Humanitarian Entrepreneurship Winter Academy 2026 in the Philippines.
It was my first time to Philippines, and wow, what a journey! Meeting students from medicine, engineering, and other fields, all working on humanitarian projects, was inspiring. During this program, I formed bonds with friends from Batangas State University and fellow Lingnan students–relationships that taught me valuable lessons about culture, teamwork, and perseverance.
Despite initial worries about my future–being so far from home, away from my parents, and navigating life in a new city, the warmth, acceptance, and kindness I found here made all those fears fade away. Hence, it helped shape my outlook and aspirations.
Thoughts and Reflection
Studying in Hong Kong at Lingnan has been a transformative experience. It has challenged me, taught me resilience, and helped me discover my strengths–sometimes through humorous missteps and unexpected adventures. I am deeply thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given and look forward to the many more lessons, growth, and friendships that lie ahead. The same or even better opportunity awaits–seize it now!!!
