We had a nice meal gathering before the Chinese New Year. I shared with my two host daughters about the traditional customs like going to flower market and visiting relatives at CNY

I was grateful and pleasant to join the Lingnan Host Family Scheme this year, providing a platform for me to connect with two energetic and exceptional international students – Selin and Eichan! Not only did they share a lot of their Turkish and Burmese with me, but we made some good memories by participating diverse cultural activities organized by the OSA Team. I have enjoyed joining this program by being exposed to different new cultures and creating bonding with them in Lingnan community.

I strongly recommend this program to colleagues to share the HK culture and bring international students together. Much appreciation goes to the two hostees for offering me a fruitful experience!

I am glad to join the host family scheme this year. It is a meaningful program to connect staff members with international students to promote cultural exchange and establish bonding. It is exciting to meet my two host daughters, Alina and Amina. I shared with them about Lingnan facilities and events and introduced Chinese culture during different traditional festivals. Studying abroad is not an easy task, especially during the pandemic. The host family scheme is an excellent program to help international students adapt to this new home and feel the warm welcome from Lingnanians. I highly recommend staff members join this program. Having good food together is always a great start to breaking the boundaries and starting a conversation. I like this program and feel thankful to know my two host daughters.

Each year, Lingnan University admitted non-local students from Mainland China and all over the world. Non-local students left their hometowns and home countries to settle down in a relatively unfamiliar place. This is a great challenge for them. I am glad to be one of the host families for several years. I shared local culture with my hostees, helped them to understand the cultural differences and adjust to the new lives in Hong Kong. What is more, they talked to me when they encountered any difficulties in their studies and daily lives. All these interactions contributed to our strong and long-lasting friendships. Thank you Lingnan for providing this "heartful services" for the non-local students. This scheme made them feel like they are at home even though they are far away from their hometowns and home countries. I will continue to take care of these students and show my gratitude to Lingnan with my action.

Host Family Scheme is a meaningful programme which can help foreign students to adapt to the new life in Hong Kong. 2019/20 was a special year that we had to keep strong to overcome many challenges. Especially during the pandemics, we supported each other via the instant messaging platform. By sharing news and sending messages to each other, bonding was building up among the “family members”. It doesn’t need to be long, but a simple word “Cheers! 加油!” is already a huge boost! I am glad that the Host Family Scheme provided a platform for us (Mentor and Mentees) to stand together, and be a FAMILY!

Adapting a new environment can be daunting, as I discovered when I first arrived at Lingnan University. Joining the LHFS program has provided me with much-needed relief. Meeting new people, staying with a host family, and exploring Hong Kong with newly arrived students was an excellent way to adjust to a new environment and overcome the city's overwhelming size. Thank you to my host father (Dr. OH Do Young) for the insightful conversations that we had over a variety of activities. From the moment we had Korean BBQ to the ferry voyage to the end of the program, it was not only enjoyable, but we also developed a close bond with my host. Of course, Dr. Do Young has impressed me with his expertise as a doctor at Lingnan, and he has always shown concern for both me and my family. Having a host family has made my campus life at Lingnan more enjoyable and memorable.

The Lingnan Host family Scheme was a wonderful chance for me to experience many things and create memories with my beautiful host mom Karie and my one and only host sister Eichan. The scheme started right after the beginning of semester so Karie felt like a person that I've known for a very long time. We experienced fun things together. I tried Taiwanese food and Lingnan House for the first time, we made nice memories in workshop and we experienced Star Ferry together. Karie prepared her childhood snacks with a postcard when we first met. She is such a warm person with a warm heart. I am so lucky that I have a chance to meet her and it is comforting knowing that I have someone to talk to whenever I’m in need. If I had a chance to join the Host Family Scheme until I graduate, I will definitely do that. Biggest thanks to Karie, Eichan and OSA for helping me adjust to my new home!

My Host Father, Dr. Lam Man Chuen, Frank and I was first met at the Lingnan cafeteria. My first impression of Dr. Lam was that he is energetic and such a kind person. We talked about Kazakhstan and Hong Kong, as well as the culture, traditions and privileges of the indigenous people of Hong Kong. We also showed each other photos of our families and came to a conclusion that the faces are somewhat similar.

After meeting with Dr. Lam, a desire of learning Cantonese was appeared in my mind. Dr. Lam recommended me one language-learning mobile application developed by his previous institute. Moreover, Dr. Lam watched and was impressed by my performance of playing Kazakh national musical instrument - Dombra in the University-wide event “RE:Imagine Flea Market”. Another enjoyable experience is that I had a Korean BBQ dinner with Dr. Lam and his youngest daughter Charmaine. We talked about some interesting facts of Hong Kong and Australia, and practiced some Cantonese at the dinner. Great thanks to Dr. Lam! With his care, support and advice, I was able to adapt to Hong Kong culture and life quickly, make more new friends and most importantly, I was being motivated to do more sports.

Now I'm not in Hong Kong, but we still have good relations with each other. I’m looking forward to our next meeting.

I am really grateful to the Lingnan Host Family Scheme and my host mother Nans' help for me. As a non-local student, when I first came to Lingnan, I was very anxious and worried. My host mother helped me get familiar with the new environment and made me feel that studying at Lingnan is warm and happy. We are both foodies. Nans usually takes me to try all kinds of delicious food near our school, from seafood hotpot to dessert, helping me get acquainted with the surroundings. As for our relationship, it is not just like host mother and daughter, but more like close friends. She has always supported me and gave me a lot of meaningful suggestions. I remember she gave me a chocolate bar when I was facing the final exam; She helped me prepare for the interview … All these supports really touched me. Above all, I felt very lucky to be able to participate in the Lingnan Host Family Scheme and met my host mother. It is an unforgettable and memorable experience for me.
