Adjustment Tips from Senior Non-local Students

Welcome to Lingnan University!

Firstly, I applaud your courage and strength for coming to a whole new environment by yourself. You may feel nervous and find difficult in adjusting to a new place but don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here are some of my tips:

1. Get yourself a student Octopus Card! You can use this card for laundry, transportation and purchasing daily necessities and groceries. It takes a while to get the student version so remember to apply it as soon as possible.

2. Have fun and get involved with the university. There are many different societies, festivals, and group activities that you can take part in. If you love learning about different cultures while sharing about your own, you can join the Cultural Ambassador Programme.

3. Hong Kong is filled with amazing bookstores, cafes, and hiking trails. When you’re tired, you can hop on the bus and explore the city. On that note, remember to explore the university as well. You can book the piano room through an online system but if you’re not shy and love performing in front of people, there is a cute piano at the cafeteria that you can play with. Also, there is a comfortable 24-hour study room and a beautiful new library that makes a wonderful place for study sessions with group mates and friends.

Whenever you’re facing difficulties, please don’t keep it to yourself! Everyone here is willing to help and guide you around so don’t hesitate to ask for help. I hope you enjoy your university life here.

Don't be shy, just give it a shot. Students of Lingnan are offered with numerous opportunities that benefit to their academic pursuit and personal development. Studying at university is also a process for self-discovery as well. Making and networking with friends. During the three years of study, I made some really good friends from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and other countries. The time that I spent with them which not only eased my homesickness but also helped me better relate to people with different cultures and broadened my horizons. Go ahead and make friends!

Wish you a happy and fulfilling university life. As Henry Thoreau said, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”

Hi everyone!!

As a person who used to be a freshman, I know that you are worried about your future life in Hong Kong. But honestly, there is no need to be worried.

As a newly arrived non-local students, it seems challenging for you to live in Hong Kong. However, once you get to know it better, everything feels just right. As I always say, everything that you can think of which can be found in Hong Kong. Therefore, you will always find some cool places to eat, hike, shop or anything else that you have on your to-do list.

The most important thing that I learned, is that you have to open yourself and embrace your new chapter in Hong Kong.  It’s not only about food, places and adventures, but also about people you meet along your way. In addition to academic studies, try to make the most out of the time to make friends, see places and create memories. There is a plethora of attractions in Hong Kong which both you and I have not yet discovered.

Good luck on your journey! Have fun!
