Hong Kong has a diverse range of public transportation options including buses, minibuses, railways, taxis, tramways and ferries.

Most of the buses in Hong Kong are double-decker and air-conditioned.  Different bus companies provide bus routes covering almost all places in Hong Kong including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Hong Kong has two types of minibuses: Green and Red minibuses.  Minibuses are air-conditioned small buses with 16 or 19 seats.  Green minibuses have fixed routes and fares while red minibuses do not follow a fixed route or fare structure.  



Hong Kong has three types of taxis: Red for Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, Green for the New Territories and Blue for Lantau Island.

Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and Light Rail

MTR is one of the most convenient and efficient public transport in Hong Kong.  The MTR system has 11 railway lines covering all of the major districts in the city.  Light Rail is a rail system that only covers Tuen Mun, Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai districts in the New Territories.  For travelling to Lingnan University, the nearest MTR and Light Rail Station is Siu Hong Station, which is just a 10-minute walk from the campus.

Star Ferry

There are also different ferries for travelling to the outlying islands of Hong Kong.  One of the popular routes is the Star Ferry, which travels between Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon Peninsula.

Tramways - “Ding Ding”

Hong Kong Tramways, known as “Ding Ding”, is an iconic mode of transportation that runs on Hong Kong Island between Kennedy Town and Shau Kei Wan, with a branch circulating through Happy Valley.

MTR Student Travel Scheme

The MTR offers concessionary fares to Personalized Octopus Cardholders who have student status under the MTR Student Travel Scheme.  

This scheme is open for full-time students aged between 12 and 25.  Students can apply for the MTR Student Travel Scheme through the MTR’s official website or mobile app.

Octopus Card

Octopus card is an electronic stored-value card which is accepted all over Hong Kong.  The card extends the convenience of travelling around Hong Kong, as most forms of public transport accept it.  Moreover, Octopus Card payment is widely accepted at convenience stores, restaurants, supermarkets, self-service machines, leisure facilities, etc.  On campus, students can use their Octopus card to make payments at the student canteen, library and student hostel laundry services.  Cards can be purchased at customer service centres at any MTR station or convenience store at the airport or train station in the city.
