Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative (LEI)
Furniture-Coffin
The furniture-coffin by LEI is an innovation that came to life in reflection of the current way of living in compact developed cities like Hong Kong. To promote green living, a bookshelf that can be transformed into a coffin was developed. The product is made of sustainable, high-quality birch and spruce plywood from northern European forests, and fulfill strict requirements for wood-based materials in terms of environmental friendliness, strength and durability.
Dr Albert Ko, Director of LEI and Project Leader, said: “We are taking the initiative in introducing new ways and means of protecting the environment by redesigning the coffin and improving its functions and usability. People can have a set of environmentally friendly bookshelves that literally last a lifetime, and then accompany them for the funeral rituals.”
The project was implemented in collaboration with Forget Thee Not, a social enterprise promoting green burial and funerals in Hong Kong. Public awareness events and workshops were organised to promote the innovative product as a green alternative for end-of-life management.
