Lingnan-Yuanpei STEM Summer Academy

The "Lingnan-Yuanpei STEM Summer Academy 2024", jointly organised by Lingnan University (Hong Kong) and Peking University Yuanpei College, aims to support student entrepreneurs from both universities in transforming their innovative ideas into grant-winning business plans, while fostering their liberal arts qualities and entrepreneurial spirit. The Summer Academy consists of two parts. The first part includes pre-camp workshops, an online kick-off ceremony, individual guidance, and takes place from March to June. The second part is a seven-day Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Camp and STEM competition held at the end of June. 

 

 

The Summer Academy will take place in Hong Kong, experienced entrepreneurship experts, top scientists, and representatives from funding institutions such as Hong Kong Science Park are invited to help students develop practical and feasible business plans so as to obtain entrepreneurial funding from major funding institutions.

 

 

During the training camp, students from both universities will join different project teams and prepare entrepreneurial plans under the guidance of mentors. A competition will then be held and the winning team will be nominated for fast-track applications for various funds.

 

 

Programme Highlights

  •  Nomination for fast-track application to HKSTP Ideation Programme and various funds;
  • Guidance by subject matter experts including renowned professors, guest speakers and business partners to strengthen domain knowledge in STEM and entrepreneurship;
  • Inter-institutional teams to enhance exchange and collaboration between Beijing and Hong Kong for career advancement;
  •  Financial support for prototyping and start-up incubation

Programme Details

  • Date: 22-28 June 2024 (Online training will be conducted from March to May)
  • Content: Team building activities, STEM innovation and entrepreneurial training, cultural exchange, company visits and a competition*
  • Medium of Instruction: Mandarin and English
  • Venue: Lingnan University (Hong Kong) and various locations in Hong Kong China
  • Target Participants: 15 students and alumni from each university, totaling 30 participants
  • Fee: Free (Includes accommodation, meals, transportation, funding for innovation and entrepreneurship, programme fee, visa, insurance etc.)
  • Registration:  Complete the online application form on or before 20 March 2024 (Link)
    (Selection will be done by the organiser if the number of applications exceeds quota)

STEM Competition Project Theme: Green and Smart Technology. 

 

Projects include but not limited to the following six topics:

  • 1.      Sustainable Green Buildings

  • 2.      Sustainable Biodiversity Ecosystem

  • 3.      Smart automatic control system improves quality of life
  • 4.      Smart Residential College System
  • 5.      The Holographic Projection Platform where reality and virtual reality coexist

  • 6.      Drone (FPV) competition projects and on-site platform

Brief introduction of each topic

 

Guidelines for Project Teams

  • Students will form teams by selecting topics and will be guided by mentors assigned from both universities.

  • Each team must include students from both universities and allocate tasks based on interests and expertise to complete the project.

  • Each team will receive funding for prototype development.

  • Teams are required to present their project at the pitching competition, which will be evaluated and awarded by the judging panel.

  • The judging panel will consist of faculty members from both universities, along with invited experts and professional competition judges from relevant fields.

  • The judging panel will establish a rubric to evaluate project teams’ performance based on innovation, feasibility, commercial value, and other criteria.  First, second, and third prizes will be awarded, with cash prizes ranging from HKD10,000 to HKD30,000, determined by the competition selection committee.

  • All participating teams will receive attendance certificates upon completion of all activities at the academy.
