It was a joy to meet my two lovely hostesses from different regions of the Chinese Mainland through the Lingnan Host Family Scheme. Many thoughtful activities were organised by OSA throughout the year, introducing Hong Kong culture, helping students feel at home away from home, and exploring other parts of the city. The variety of programmes provided by the university at heavily subsidised rates enabled the hostees to truly immerse themselves in life in Hong Kong without any financial burden.
In addition, my hostees and I enjoyed some casual gatherings. We regularly caught up at university, texted each other during exam period and holidays, shared many meals, joined a skincare workshop together to make body scrub, and visited some horses at Sha Tin Racecourse. One of the most memorable events I organised was treating my hostees to a dinner at my home. Being in a home setting made them very relaxed, and they openly shared the challenges and aspirations in their lives. I was glad that I could provide them with some advice from my own experiences to brighten up their day.
I would definitely recommend the Host Family Scheme to any non-local students and colleagues who are thinking about offering them warmth and care!

As a host family for several years, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Host Family Scheme! It offers a fantastic opportunity to connect with non-local students and gain insight into their needs and cultures. This scheme allows me to provide essential support in a warm and friendly environment, making a real difference in helping them adapt to university life in Hong Kong.
I am delighted to share meals, stories, and cultural experiences, fostering genuine friendships that can last a lifetime. It is fascinating to learn about different customs and perspectives, and you might even discover some new culinary delights! You will find joy in helping students navigate their new surroundings, whether it is assisting with local customs or simply being a listening ear.
If you are considering becoming a host family, I encourage you to take the leap. It is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling for both you and the students. Join us in making their university life memorable and supportive—together, we can create a nurturing community!

This is a very meaningful activity, for the students, they come to a new and unfamiliar city for the first time to study and live, there may be various difficulties and discomforts. Host family activities should be to a certain extent to enrich their lives outside the classroom, relieve the tension of study and help them adjust to their new surroundings.
It is a very happy experience for our teachers. I personally have a very strong feeling that the students of the post-00s generation have their own independent thoughts, strengths and characteristics, and they shine in their respective professions and fields, which is gratifying and admirable!
I’m very happy and honoured to be a host family, taking my hostees to participate in various activities and sharing my experience with them, hoping that they will have a healthy, happy and colourful learning life in HK and at Lingnan.

The Lingnan Host Family Scheme has unexpectedly become a memorable part of my university experience. My host father, Jacky, had also just joined Lingnan, which made our connection even more special. From our very first meeting at the kick-off reception, we developed a strong bond that has continued to grow throughout the program.
Our first activity together took place during the Mid-Autumn Festival, where we made rabbit flower lanterns and shared mooncakes. Jacky explained the traditions, deepening my appreciation for Hong Kong’s culture.
Jacky often shares his experiences and insights about maintaining a balanced lifestyle- reminding us to stay active through sports, games, and regular exercise. His encouragement and care extend beyond activities; he consistently checks in about my studies, well-being, and campus life. We also exchange stories about our backgrounds and have meaningful conversations on life and growth.
Being part of the Host Family Scheme enriched my time at Lingnan in countless ways. It gave me not only guidance and cultural understanding but also a meaningful friendship that continues to inspire me.

The Host Family Scheme at Lingnan University has been one of the most heartwarming parts of my university journey. As a first-year non-local student, it can be difficult to be away from home, but this programme made me feel truly welcomed and supported.
My host mom and I shared many special moments together. Our first activity was perfume making, where we explored a variety of scents and crafted our own unique fragrances. It was a beautiful way to break the ice and connect on a personal level.
Later, we went on a ride in a traditional junk boat in Victoria Harbour. The view, the breeze, and the laughter we shared that day have become one of my core memories of Hong Kong, China. This experience has not only given me a sense of belonging but also helped me better understand local culture and create bonds that feel like family.
I truly encourage every non-local student to take part in this meaningful scheme—you’ll gain much more than just fun activities; you’ll find a home away from home.

Joining the Host Family Scheme this year has been a truly enriching experience for me. Being paired with my host family, Ms Aik Min, has brought so much warmth and support into my life. Our shared mealtimes and hiking adventures have not only opened my eyes to the beauty of Hong Kong's culture but have also nurtured a deep sense of appreciation within me. I am grateful for Min's thoughtfulness, from considering my motion sickness to including me in her outings. This connection has been both enjoyable and fulfilling, and I strongly encourage new students to grasp this wonderful opportunity to make meaningful connections. Once you join, don't hesitate to reach out to your host. It’s a chance that’s truly worth taking.
