Subsite Background

Open-I Education

Open-I Education is a STEM educational service-providing project that aims at alleviate the educational inequality in Hong Kong. Open-I Education want to broaden students' horizons with innovative and insightful courses. They provide underprivileged students in Hong Kong with learning opportunities that will allow them to discover valuable and meaningful opportunities in life. They aims at providing service to at least two local schools and hold two community events, benefiting hundreds of primary and middle school students.

The Issue

In Hong Kong, nearly every one in five children are living in poverty. Unable to afford extra learning activities, those children are underprivileged when compared to those who pay for more learning opportunities. In this case, education has lost its power as the social equalizer.. Meanwhile, STEM education is now one of the most popular scheme in the education industry. Technology is playing a more important role in our society than ever. That is why it is crucial for students nowadays to understand technology as early as possible in order to be prepared for an even more technologically advanced world in the future.

The Solution

Open-I Education recognizes the social responsibility of educational institutions. Their mission is to provide STEM learning opportunities for underprivileged students, to open their eyes, and to let them discover the infinite possibility of technology in life. By providing educational services to local public and private institutions, mainly primary schools, they earn the revenue to return to the community, achieving a form of social equalization.

Impact

In the past year, Open-I STEM up Project have designed several programmes that would fit students from all levels. Their programmes include App-Inventor, Micro:bit and Arduino themes.
