SDG 14 Life Below Water

Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.

Research conducted by the Science Unit at Lingnan focuses on conservation in the wild, closely measuring and monitoring the ecosystem of various species. The University also initiates citizen science projects, working with numerous stakeholders (SDG 17) and partners to strengthen the bonds with nature.

Protecting Coastal Wetlands through Nature Based Solutions

This project examines how human driven coastal development affects wetland biodiversity using a 24 year waterbird dataset from Hong Kong and Shenzhen. By integrating ecological data with local aquaculture practices, it develops nature based solutions to support sustainable aquaculture and long term wetland conservation, advancing SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Uncovering Biodiversity in Hong Kong’s Intertidal Boulder Fields

This project explores the physical conditions and biodiversity of Hong Kong’s intertidal boulder fields, a largely overlooked coastal habitat. By examining how environmental stress and disturbance shape species diversity and community structure, the research enhances understanding of coastal ecosystems and supports SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Understanding Heat Stress Responses in Intertidal Species

This project examines how thermoregulatory behaviours help slow moving intertidal species survive rising heat stress on tropical rocky shores. By analysing thermal cues and energetic costs, the research improves predictions of species responses to climate change, supporting SDG 14: Life Below Water and SDG 13: Climate Action.

Advancing Clean Water and Sanitation through Community Engagement

Supported by the Environment and Conservation Fund, the Hong Kong Ocean Environmental Pioneer Academy trains individuals to promote water pollution prevention. Through workshops and community events, the Academy raises awareness and fosters collaboration, ensuring sustainable management of water resources while engaging approximately 2,400 participants in vital sanitation practices.

Minor in Environmental and Scientific Literacy

This minor course focuses on the development of “science literacy” as a lifelong skill that can be applied to a variety of scientific and technological issues, rather than the mastery of content knowledge in a specific scientific discipline.

MPhil in Environmental Science

This programme equips students with a strong theoretical background in environmental sciences, as well as provide a diversity of hands-on, experiential experiences needed to be successful in this field.
