Appointment of Prof Chan Yuk-shee as the Next President of Lingnan University

19 Jun 2006

The Council of Lingnan University ("Lingnan" or "the University") at today's meeting accepted the recommendation of its Search Committee that Prof CHAN Yuk-Shee be appointed as the University's President for a term of five years from 1 September 2007 to 31 August 2012.

Prof Chan Yuk-Shee is currently the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Chair Professor of Finance at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology ("HKUST"). In possession of extensive experience in university administration, in-depth knowledge of Hong Kong, and a thorough understanding of the policy and development of education in Hong Kong, Prof Chan also fully agrees to the mission of Lingnan as a distinguished provider of liberal arts education.

Also a leading finance academic with global vision, Prof Chan has taught in Hong Kong and in the United States. He has established an effective network with institutions both in the Chinese Mainland and overseas, and has been active in promoting international exchanges and collaborations among these institutions.

The Council believes that, with his wealth of leadership and management capabilities while capitalising on Lingnan's establishments, Prof Chan would lead the University to advance and develop as an internationally recognised liberal arts university in the region in the face of challenges and opportunities, after assuming the office in September 2007.

At today's meeting, the Council resolved to consult the Court on the appointment. As the recommended final candidate for presidentship, Prof Chan joined the Search Committee and met with Lingnan staff and student representatives for the first time today prior to the meeting. They exchanged views with and answered questions from the floor, which enabled the attending staff and students to have more knowledge of Prof Chan.

Prof Chan received his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong ("CUHK"), and his Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Arts (MA) in Economics and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Finance and Economics degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He had served as a finance faculty member at CUHK and the Northwestern University as well as the University of Southern California where he was the Justin Dart Term Professor of Finance.

Prof Chan joined HKUST in 1990 and was appointed as the Vice-President for Academic Affairs in 2001 until now. As the Founding Dean of the HKUST Business School, he played a pivotal role in launching the joint Executive Master of Business Administration Programme (EMBA) co-organised with the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University.
