SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

Lingnan University adopts a systematic, data driven waste management strategy, using a Waste Monitoring and Reporting System to track and reduce municipal solid waste. With comprehensive recycling initiatives and targeted reduction measures, the University strengthens environmental accountability and minimises its ecological footprint.

Lingnan researchers developed recyclable, biodegradable DNA–polysaccharide hydrogels made from plant and bio waste materials. Water processable and solvent resistant, these self healing bioplastics enable simple aqueous recycling and scalable production. The innovation promotes circular, eco friendly material design, advancing SDG 12 and offering a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics.

Lingnan researchers are developing next generation solid state and sodium based batteries with enhanced safety and energy density. Innovations include improved solid state fluoride ion interfaces, non flammable electrolytes for high voltage lithium metal batteries, and fast charging anode free sodium systems. This work advances sustainable, high performance energy storage aligned with SDG 12.

Lingnan researchers, in partnership with the German Primate Center and Hong Kong authorities, develop genetic and isotope based forensic methods to trace wildlife origins. Their evidence supports successful prosecutions, confirms illegal harvesting of local species, and strengthens global efforts under SDG 12 to promote responsible use and protection of biodiversity.

Dr. Leung Shi chi promotes sustainable waste practices by drawing on traditional ecological knowledge and hands on composting. His research on recycling food waste and human excreta highlights low cost, cyclical resource use and encourages public participation. Through global engagement, he demonstrates how practical action can shift attitudes and advance SDG 12.

Lingnan University advances SDG 12 through JCSCCP initiatives including lunchbox lending, low carbon food fairs, vegetarian dining campaigns, and food waste upcycling workshops. These programmes engage students and staff in responsible consumption, reduce waste, and foster a more sustainable and environmentally conscious campus culture.

Lingnan University supports SDG 12 by ensuring the safe handling, disposal, and recycling of hazardous waste, including chemicals, electronic waste, fluorescent lamps, and batteries. Collection points and licensed recycling facilities are provided to turn waste into resources, adhering to environmental regulations and promoting a healthy, sustainable campus environment.
