Lingnan University Names Art Gallery after Mrs LEUNG Fong Oi Wan
The Naming of Lingnan University ("Lingnan" or "the University") Art Gallery after Mrs LEUNG Fong Oi Wan today (19 Oct 2006) gave a meaning beyond the recognition of contribution and support of a successful entrepreneur to the University, it embodied also the love and respect of the successful entrepreneur to his loving mother.
The Lingnan University LEUNG Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery was named after the mother of Mr Michael LEUNG Executive Chairman, Onwel Group of Companies, and Director and Managing Director of China Mobile Peoples Telephone Company Limited, in appreciation of Mr Leung's contribution and longstanding support to education and the University.
A renowned and visionary entrepreneur and longstanding supporter in education and Lingnan, Mr Leung recently made a donation of HK$5,000,000 to the University in support of its Service-Learning and Research Scheme. The donation will be matched dollar-to-dollar under the Matching Grant Scheme by the University Grants Committee. A cheque presentation was held concurrently today at the ceremony.

Speaking at the Leung Fong Oi Wan Art Gallery naming and cheque presentation ceremony, President Professor Edward CHEN expressed his deep appreciation to Mr Leung for his generous support to liberal arts education as well as to the University's Service-Learning and Research Scheme, making the University's future endeavour in the development of service-learning possible.
Mr Leung said in the ceremony that the naming represented the family's love and respect to his mother. He shared also his appreciation for the of Lingnan's liberal arts education mission, and considered the University's newly developed Service-Learning and Research Scheme a good platform for young students to integrate learning and services hrough participation and provision of services to the community.
Mr Leung believed social services could not be successfully implemented without stable economic sup
port. He took the initiative to transform himself from being a social worker in his earlier days to a successful entrepreneur today, and never stopped contributing to the community ever since. Mr Leung was conferred an honorary fellowship of Lingnan University in recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the economic development of Hong Kong and his outstanding performance in education and other community services in 2005.
Lingnan's Art Gallery was established in 2005, providing the University to promote art appreciation and cultural exchanges. The gallery currently showcases an exhibition of a local prominent artist Mr Marco Szeto's painting.
