“Walking with Lingnanians” Fundraising Walkathon 2013

20 Oct 2013

Today more than 850 students, alumni, teachers, staff and friends of Lingnan University participated in the fourth “Walking with Lingnanians” fundraising walkathon 2013. As the opening event of “Lingnan University Week 2013”, an annual array of activities of the University, the walkathon this year started from Tai Wan Shan Park, Hung Hom and proceeded to the Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui. Over HK$1.8 million was raised in support of the University’s whole-person development programmes.

Officiating guests of the kick-off ceremony included Mrs Cherry Tse, JP, Permanent Secretary for Education, Government of HKSAR; The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, Chairman of the University Council; Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Deputy Chairman of the University Council; Prof Albert Ip Yuk-keung, Chairman of the University Institutional Advancement Committee and President Leonard K Cheng.

Mr Bernard Chan thanked Mrs Tse for her participation in the Fundraising Walkathon again. He said, "Over the past three years, our Fundraising Walkathon has been held at the Peak on Hong Kong Island, from Tsuen Wan Park to Sham Tseng in New Territories West and along Shing Mun River of Sha Tin in New Territories East. This year it is from Tai Wan Shan Park, Hung Hom to the Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon West. The annual Fundraising Walkathon has spread Lingnanians’ footprints all over Hong Kong and provided an opportunity for the University to engage with the community, so that they can learn about our liberal arts ethos. Lingnan is small in scale, but we have been seeking for breakthrough progressively."

President Leonard K Cheng was delighted to join this annual large-scale outdoor fundraising activity for the first time. He said, "Lingnan University aspires to become a meeting place of Chinese and Western cultures, so that our students can learn from the best of both worlds and become truly global citizens. We need support from the community to achieve this goal." He also thanked Mr Rex Auyeung, Bright Future Charitable Foundation, Mr Irons Sze, JP and Dr & Mrs James T Wu as the diamond sponsors, Dr Alison Chan and Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited as the gold sponsors, as well as Four Seas Mercantile Holding Limited, 759STORE, Angel Cosmetics as supporting organisations. This is the fourth time that Four Seas Mercantile Holding Limited has supported the event.

Every dollar raised from the Walkathon will be counted in Lingnan’s application for matching grants under the Government’s Sixth Matching Grant Scheme. Lingnan University has already raised $60 million earlier and the amount has been matched one-to-one by the Government.
