Lingnan University (LU) organised a two-day event entitled “International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Applications” (AIBD) from 19 to 20 July 2023 gathering experts in the field to discuss the latest knowledge and research trends in AIBD and their domain-specific applications. The conference aims to enhance the standards and external competitiveness of Hong Kong information and communications technology (ICT) professionals by providing them with information relating to the application of artificial intelligence and big data.

 

In his opening remarks, Prof S. Joe Qin, President Designate and Acting President of LU said that this conference is a beacon of Lingnan's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and knowledge transfer, showcasing LU’s dedication to maintaining international reputation for quality education and high-impact research. “In an era where technology plays a pivotal role in every aspect of life, it is our responsibility to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate this rapidly evolving landscape. This conference, with its in-depth exploration of AI and Big Data, enriches our curriculum and offers our students unique insights into these critical areas of study. It also serves as a platform to highlight the groundbreaking work our scholars are conducting in AI and Big Data, and to facilitate dialogue with international experts in the field,” said Prof Qin.

 

Prof Qin added that LU excels in knowledge transfer, particularly in domains like gerontechnology and smart ageing, culture and heritage, humanitarian technology, and environmental sustainability. By focusing on AI and Big Data at this conference, Lingnanians are able to expand their efforts by bridging the gap between academia, industry, and the community to create impactful, sustainable solutions to pressing challenges.

 

The International Conference on AIBD was funded by Professional Services Advancement Support Scheme (PASS) of Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, the Government of Hong Kong SAR and organised by Prof Xie Haoran, Prof Wong Man-leung, and Dr Ho Wing, Rosiah from Department of Computing and Decision Sciences and LEO Dr David P Chan Institute of Data Science of LU with support by School of Graduate Studies and MScAIBA Office of LU, and IEEE Hong Kong Section Computer Society Chapter. The Conference also featured a panel of distinguished speakers including Prof Shen Qiang, Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom, Prof Jiannong Cao, Dean of the Graduate School and Chair Professor of Distributed and Mobile Computing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof Hwang Gwo-Jen, Chair Professor of Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Prof Amir Hussain, Professor of Edinburgh Napier University in the United Kingdom, Prof Zhang Yanchun, Professor of Victoria University in Australia and Prof Xu Guandong, Professor of the University of Technology Sydney in Australia to share the latest developments in AI applications implemented in various aspects. Prof Li Dong-hui, Associate Vice-President (Student Affairs) of LU, delivered the closing remarks. Over 150 students, scholars and professionals joined the event to exchange their valuable insights into AIBD.
